  • Langston Britton, a 14-year-old from Wisconsin, died in a drowning incident at Silver Birch Ranch Christian camp
  • While swimming with his youth group, Britton went underwater in a lake and never resurfaced
  • Despite rescuers applying CPR and life-saving measures, Britton did not survive the drowning

A 14-year-old boy from the Chicago area who drowned while at a church camp in Wisconsin last week was remembered for his kindness and compassion.

John Ciesniewski, a pastor with Community Christian Church in Plainfield, Ill., and a friend of the family, identified the victim as Langston Britton in a GoFundMe created after the boy’s death.

The incident occurred on Friday, July 25, at the Silver Birch Ranch, a Christian camp in White Lake, Wis., around 1:15 p.m. local time. According to a news release shared by the camp, the boy was at Silver Birch Ranch with his youth group when he went underwater while swimming in a designated swimming area and never resurfaced.

Life guards immediately arrived at the scene and found and recovered the boy from the lake, Silver Birch Ranch said, adding that CPR and life-saving measures were administered on the victim until emergency responders arrived. A rescue helicopter was also deployed.

NBC affiliate WMAQ reported that police responded to a call about a possible drowning at Sawyer Lake in Wolf River.

“Despite the swift and dedicated efforts for our staff and emergency responders, the young man tragically passed away. His family was notified through their church,” the camp shared in their release.

“We ask for prayers for the family, the church youth group, and everyone at camp during this incredibly difficult time,” the statement later concluded.

There is no mention in the camp’s news release of an investigation into the incident. PEOPLE contacted the Langlade County Sheriff’s Office for information on Wednesday, July 30.

In the GoFundMe created on behalf of Langston’s family, Ciesniewski described what happened as a “tragic drowning accident.”

“Langston lived a life marked by grace, curiosity, faith, and compassion. He loved God sincerely and served others with kindness and humility,” Ciesniewski said. “His laughter, his questions, his hugs, and his presence brought warmth and joy to every room he entered. He had a unique way of making people feel seen, heard, and deeply valued—reminding us all of the beauty found in simply showing up with love.”

According to an obituary, Langston was from Romeoville, Ill. The obituary and media reports note that he was 14 years old.

“Though his time on earth was heartbreakingly short, Langston’s impact was eternal,” the pastor wrote on GoFundMe. “He taught us to love more deeply, to forgive more freely, and to live with courage and wonder. His smile was unforgettable. His faith unwavering.”

In a message to parents that was shared with WMAQ, Romeoville High School said that Langston was planning to attend the school in the fall.

As we grieve this profound loss, we encourage families to speak with their children and offer support as needed.”

Ciesniewski wrote that money raised through the GoFundMe for the family will go to pay for funeral and memorial expenses and support services. PEOPLE has contacted Ciesniewski for comment.
