On the Sunday, April 6, season 2 finale of 1923, Spencer (Brandon Sklenar) and pregnant Alex (Julia Schlaepfer) eventually make their way back to each other after overcoming several obstacles. However, the pair’s reunion is short-lived as Spencer returns to help at the ranch while Alex travels to a hospital for frostbite.
While in the hospital, Alex gives birth to her and Spencer’s baby — a boy named John who is premature and may not survive. Alex, for her part, is told that several of her limbs need to be amputated, but she refuses. Spencer returns to the hospital and the new family of three are together. But the reunion is short-lived as Spencer wakes up the next morning and Alex is dead next to him.

Julia Schlaepfer knows the love story she and Brandon Sklenar have brought to life in 1923 is special — and according to her, the connection they share in real life is completely organic. In an exclusive interview with Us Weekly, the actress, 29, revealed she and Sklenar, 34, immediately hit it off when production began […]
“They fall asleep together and she drifts away,” Schlaepfer, 30, recalled to USA Today, adding that costars Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren were there for the scene. “There’s no other way to say it. It hurt to film.”
As Spencer grieves his wife in the episode, he proceeds to kill Donald Whitfield (Timothy Dalton) — which Sklenar, 34, noted was due to his character’s heartbreak.
“Men at that time weren’t really exactly attuned to their emotions. There weren’t podcasts on how to process your grief at the time,” Sklenar said. “His pain moves through his physicality, and his revenge is vindicating. It’s a little bit of the power of Spencer, the power of love and the power of the bullet.”
Back in the episode, the Duttons proceed to have a funeral for Alex and Jack (Darren Mann), who died in episode 6 of 1923 season 2. Alex is given a gravestone at the family ranch.
“It’s such an honor,” Schlaepfer said. “I know that everyone will be upset about [Alex] being a part of the Dutton family cemetery.”
As the finale comes to an end, a voiceover says, “Spencer never remarried. Took the comfort of a widow and made another boy, refused to marry her, and one day, the widow was gone.” Spencer ultimately lives 45 more years after Alex’s death. The couple is reunited on a ballroom floor, where they dance. Alex quips, “Took you long enough.”
“We did our best to bring this couple’s story to life and do justice to their role in Dutton history,” Sklenar explained. “It was such an honor.”
