At least two people have reportedly died and 39 others injured after a coach carrying tourists crashed on the Red Sea coast, north of Hurghada in Egypt.

On Tuesday, Nov. 11, a tourist bus collided into a heavy truck in the early morning on the Ras Gharib-Hurghada road, just over 200 miles south of Cairo, Al Masry Al Youm reported.

The incident resulted in the death of the coach driver and a passenger, according to Gulf News.

Among the 39 others injured, there were 27 Russians, two Lithuanians, seven people from Finland, as well as two Egyptian drivers and a tour guide, Al Masry Al Youm reported.

Confirming that the passenger who lost their life was a Russian national, the Russian Consulate General in Hurghada wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter), “At approximately 4:00 a.m. on November 11, an accident occurred on the Hurghada-Cairo highway near Ras Ghareb (150 km from Hurghada).”

Preliminary investigations found that the tourist bus had been traveling from Hurghada to archaeological and tourist sites in a convoy to Cairo, per Al Masry Al Youm.

Following the crash, multiple ambulances arrived at the scene with numerous people being transported to Ras Gharib Hospital with “various injuries.”

Jussi Tanner, the head of consular services at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in Finland, confirmed that several Finnish citizens were on board the bus at the time of the accident, per Yle.

According to Tanner, the injuries sustained by Finnish citizens were not thought to be serious.

The front of the tourist bus, which belonged to a tourism company along the Red Sea, also sustained severe damage, according to the outlet.

The Ras Gharib city prosecution has opened an investigation into the incident, per Al Masry Al Youm.

A field inspection of the crash site, as well as CCTV footage and witness statements are set to be used in the investigation, Gulf News reported.
