Two people have been seriously injured in a road accident after a loose tire went airborne and struck another vehicle in Pennsylvania, according to reports.

At around 1:30 p.m. local time on Monday, Sept. 15, a car traveling southbound on Interstate 476 lost its tire and it crashed into the windshield of an SUV traveling north in Whitpain Township, Montgomery County, NBC10 Philadelphia reported, citing the Pennsylvania State Police.

Two people inside the SUV were injured in the incident and were flown to the hospital, according to the outlet. Their conditions are reported to be serious, per 6abc Philadelphia.

The loose tire reportedly came from a pickup truck, which then flew into the air and collided with the SUV, according to 6abc Philadelphia.

In images obtained by the outlet, an SUV on the side of the road is seen with the windshield completely smashed through and part of the roof caved in following the collision.

“We saw fire trucks, we figured it was an accident. But once the helicopters came, it kind of felt like they were going to transport people. So it was like, okay, this is pretty bad,” witness Lea Agbomson told 6abc Philadelphia.

“We can’t really go anywhere. Pacing back and forth. Staying in the car to cool down, keeping busy one way or the other,” she added.

Pennsylvania Turnpike’s Northeast Extension was closed in both directions for two hours after the crash until around 3:30 p.m. local time, leaving several people stuck in traffic and unable to exit the road, per NBC10 Philadelphia.

“Just prayed and hoped that we could find a solution that traffic would start up again or that we would get to an exit that we could get off and figure out an alternate route,” one woman told the outlet. “We’re hoping that everybody involved in the accident hopefully are going to be OK.”

The Pennsylvania State Police is reportedly investigating the incident.
