2 Missing Teenagers Found ‘Alive’ and ‘Cold’ After Vanishing on Florida Paddleboarding Trip: Police

Two 16-year-old girls who went missing while paddleboarding in Florida have been found alive, authorities have confirmed.

On Tuesday, March 18, the Levy County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) confirmed in an email to PEOPLE that the teenagers, who haven’t been named publicly, had been located after being reported missing on Monday, March 17.

“The girls have been located alive, cold and with a few scratches but otherwise healthy,” LCSO spokesperson, Lieutenant Scott Tummond, told PEOPLE.

The officer said the teenagers were located “approximately 14 miles South East of Cedar Key, near Yankeetown” in Fla.

Police are yet to confirm exactly what caused the girls’ disappearance. A photo of the pair on the rescue boat was also shared on the LCSO Facebook page.

The update comes after police said in a Facebook post on Monday that the girls “did not return from a paddle board excursion in Cedar Key” that day.

“They were last seen around 4:00 p.m. [local time] paddling toward Cedar Key from Atsena Otie,” the post added.

“The girls were sharing a black and white paddle board,” police confirmed. Officers shared a photo of the girls on the board, both kneeling down and facing opposite directions, that had been taken earlier that day.

Police confirmed that the LCSO Marine Unit, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and the U.S. Coast Guard had been “searching by water and air,” per the post, before the missing girls were located.

The FWC and the U.S. Coast Guard didn’t immediately respond when contacted by PEOPLE for comment.
