‘Mamma Mia!’ (2008)

Grab your sandals and your disco attire, because it’s time to journey to the Greek island of Kalokairi where Donna and her Dynamos will turn you into a “Dancing Queen.” The Broadway show Mamma Mia! pioneered the whole “jukebox musical” concept that’s become so popular since then (see & Juliet, Jersey Boys or Moulin Rouge), and the movie version is an energetic and bubbly tribute. Sophie (Amanda Seyfried), a young bride-to-be who is determined to have her father walk her down the aisle at her wedding. The catch is, she doesn’t know who her father is.

After discovering her mother’s old diary, Sophie invites three men who could potentially be her father to her wedding without telling her mother, Donna (Meryl Streep). The narrative unfolds as the three men – Sam (Pierce Brosnan), Bill (Stellan Skarsgård), and Harry (Colin Firth) – arrive on the island, causing comedic and emotional chaos for Donna and her long-time friends (and former bandmates), played by Julie Walters and Christine Baranski. Not all the movie cast members are Broadway-level singers (Brosnan is pretty croaky in his musical numbers), but their chemistry and enthusiasm make the movie a delightful viewing experience.

‘The Disaster Artist’ (2017)

The Room is a cult classic film that has become infamous for its nonsensical plot, wooden performances and the unplaceable accent of its writer/director/star Tommy Wiseau. By most accounts, it’s a movie that should never have been made. But it sure is fun to find out how it got made. Directed by James Franco, who also stars as the enigmatic Wiseau, the movie is based on Greg Sestero and Tom Bissell’s non-fiction book of the same name. It chronicles the making of the bizarre film and the bizarre friendship between Greg Sestero (Dave Franco) and Wiseau as they embark on an unlikely journey to create what became a notoriously infamous film.
