A community in Scotland is in mourning after three teenage boys died in a car crash.

Police Scotland said in a press release that the three teens — identified as Fergus Ward, Lewis Knox and Jordan Cameron, per the BBC and The Press and Journal — were traveling on the A830 road in the Highlands near the village of Arisaig at around 11:15 p.m. local time on Thursday, Aug. 28, when the crash occurred.

Ward, Knox and Cameron were traveling in a white Ford Fiesta, and all three were confirmed dead at the scene, police said.

Two local sporting clubs identified the boys as members. Police said formal identifications have yet to take place, but confirmed the boys were in their mid-teens.

A local shinty club — a Scottish sport played with a ball and sticks — confirmed in a social media post that Knox and Ward were both members, and held a moment of silence for all three teens during a match on Saturday.

“It is with great sadness that our community has lost three young local men this week. Our deepest heartfelt condolences go out to the family and friends of Fergus, Lewis and Jordan at this very difficult time,” the Fort William Shinty Club wrote in a tribute.

“Fergus Ward and Lewis Knox were both regular members of FWSC, developing right through the youth ranks and were an integral part of the current u17s squad. Both boys have deep family connections to the club,” the post continued in part. “The boys will be greatly missed by their families, friends and the wider community.”

“We hope that we can do their memory proud and honor them on the shinty field,” the club added. “Take care, everyone, and our door is open for anyone who needs us now and in future.”

The Fort William Football Club also identified Cameron as one of their players, who won a local title last season.

“Jordan was a very talented footballer and a pleasure to coach over the years we had him at 16s and 18s,” the teen’s coaches wrote on Facebook. “He’ll be deeply missed by us and everyone who knew him. We are sending our condolences to Jordan’s family and also to the families of Lewis and Fergus.”

“The outpouring of love and support from the local community to the boys’ friends and families has been nothing short of outstanding, and shows how amazing this town is when we all come together,” the football club added. “The boys were hugely popular in the area and will be missed throughout Lochaber.”

In addition to Saturday’s moment of silence, friends of the three boys also established a memorial with flowers, sporting gear bearing their names and more outside a local leisure center in their hometown of Fort William, Scotland.

First Minister of Scotland John Swinney commented on the crash, writing in an X post: “Deeply saddened to hear of the tragic loss of three young people in a car crash near Arisaig.”

“My thoughts are with their families, friends and the whole community at this heartbreaking time,” he added.

Police Scotland Inspector Donnie MacKinnon added in the press release that an investigation was still ongoing.

“Our enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances, and I am appealing for anyone who witnessed the crash and hasn’t already spoken to officers to get in touch,” he wrote. “I would also appeal to anyone who was in the area and who may have dash cam footage which could assist to contact us.”

“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the people who died as a result of this crash,” MacKinnon added.
