3 Underrated Netflix Movies to Watch This Weekend (June 6-8)

Another weekend, another night of scrolling Netflix, trying to find something good you haven’t already seen a million times.

Sometimes, with all the content on the platform, it can be hard to sort the “I didn’t see it because it wasn’t very good” from the “hidden gem” movies.

That’s why Watch With Us is bringing you recommendations for underrated movies you should definitely check out on Netflix this weekend.

For the weekend of June 6-8, we’re recommending a Lin-Manuel Miranda-directed musical, a coming-of-age story and a Judd Apatow rom-com. Check out our choices below.

‘Tick, Tick … Boom!’ (2021)

Before Jonathan Larson wrote Rent, the musical that would define generations of theater nerds, he was a struggling New Yorker trying to get his first production off the ground. This movie adaptation of his first musical, inspired by the artist’s own life, was directed by Hamilton auteur Lin-Manuel Miranda and stars Andrew Garfield.

Though some of the experiences depicted are specific to the theater industry and the late ‘80s, a lot of Jonathan’s struggles are universal and relatable. It’s an adult coming-of-age story with great music and winning performances by Garfield, Vanessa Hudgens and Alexandra Shipp.

‘Trainwreck’ (2015)

Judd Apatow, Bill Hader and Amy Schumer form a winning combo in this raunchy yet sweet romantic comedy. Amy (Schumer) is a hard-drinking, commitment-phobic writer whose father gave her the mantra “Monogamy isn’t realistic” when she was 10 years old. When she makes a real connection with Aaron (Hader), a charming sports doctor she’s supposed to be profiling, she has no idea how to be in a real relationship.

Amy’s journey towards accepting real love is full of hilarious missteps, but like all of Apatow’s best films, it has a warm heart at its center that will bring a smile to your face.

‘Sing Street’ (2016)

Once director John Carney helms this delightful movie about a teenage boy in Ireland who starts a band to impress a girl. Conor (Ferdia Walsh-Peelo) feels his life is falling apart when his father (Aidan Gillen, Game of Thrones) announces he will be transferred from his expensive school to a much rougher one amid their family’s financial problems. Inspired by his older brother’s love of futurist bands like Duran Duran and A-ha, he asks the mysterious aspiring model Raphina (Lucy Boynton) to be in his band’s music video — which means he actually has to start one.
