A 3-year-old boy died after accidentally shooting himself with a firearm in East Point, Ga., on Wednesday, July 2, police said.

When police responded to a report of a shooting at Hawthorne Way, they found the child unconscious with a single gunshot wound, per 11 Alive. The boy fatally injured himself with an unattended firearm that was in the home.

PEOPLE reached out to the East Point Police Department for comment.

The toddler was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment before he succumbed to his serious injuries, Atlanta News First reported. The firearm found near the unconscious child belonged to his father.

Family members were in the home at the time of the accidental shooting.

“Guns and children do not mix. It’s very simple,” Shawn Buchanan, Chief of Police for the City of East Point, said in a statement to Atlanta News First. “A tragedy police across Metro Atlanta say happens too often.”

Police said the 3-year-old allegedly went downstairs to look for his parents, who were asleep at the time, and ended up playing with the gun before it accidentally fired.

“It’s just a sad, very disturbing scene. A lot of officers have to go to psychological counseling, which is mandatory, but they are actually wanting to go because it’s such a disturbing scene,” Buchanan told the outlet.

“It’s really sad,” neighbor Marquita Hillman also told Atlanta News First. “I hate that it happened. People really need to keep guns away from kids to try to prevent something like this from happening.”

The investigation is ongoing, Buchanan told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
