A fourth-grade teacher in Charleston, S.C., recently turned an ordinary school day into a moment of suspense and laughter for her students.
Dani Jesmonth pretended she had discovered a crumpled "breakup letter" near the recycling bin in her classroom and announced she would read it aloud. She promised her students she would reveal who wrote it, instantly grabbing the attention of the room.
The dramatic setup had her 9 and 10-year-olds buzzing with curiosity and anticipation, but their reaction to the reveal was even more priceless.
“Their reaction was just the best ever,” Jesmonth told TODAY.com in a recent interview.

In a viral TikTok video posted Jan. 13, the John's Island Elementary school teacher can be heard reading the letter to her class as they listened carefully, but excitedly.
“Darling, this is hard for me to write, but we need to talk. We have been together for so long, but most of our time has been really bad for me. You are so controlling, and you never ask what I think,” the letter read.
“You always tell me what to do, and I am sick of it. I don't know how else to say this to you, but we're done, and it's all because of you. I've tried to talk about my feelings before, but you never really listened. So this is goodbye. Peace out!" it concluded.
During the reading, students were completely convinced the letter was real and eagerly waited for the big reveal. Yet, to their surprise, the letter was actually part of a “prank” that Jesmonth intended to be a history lesson.
"I like to be silly and play games with my kids and have a good time in general," she told the outlet.

The dramatic breakup was meant to represent the Founding Fathers’ decision to separate from England, reframing the Declaration of Independence as a breakup letter of its own.
By putting historical frustrations into modern language, Jesmonth hoped to make the lesson both memorable and meaningful. The Declaration outlined years of control and ignored grievances, much like the letter the students heard.
"I was laughing and smiling so hard that I had tears streaming down my face, and their reaction was just the best ever,” Jesmonth said.
Beyond history, the lesson also reinforced the importance of healthy, respectful relationships.
“My main goal being a teacher is I want kids to love to be at school,” she told TODAY.com. “You can teach pretty rigorous content, but you can do so in a fun way that allows kids to really enjoy what they're doing.”
