A 911 dispatcher in Florida had only been on the job for two months but acted like a seasoned pro when she assisted a mother in delivering her baby over the phone on Valentine’s Day.
Autumn Martin of the Indian River County Sheriff's Office in Vero Beach took an emergency call on Feb. 14, ABC affiliate WPBF reported. The woman on the other end of the line said she was calling on behalf of her sister, who was in active labor.
Speaking with the station, mom Shannon Wells said that she and her husband originally planned on having a water birth at their home with a midwife present — but the baby girl, the mom's fifth child, had other plans.
"I looked at my sister and I said, ‘We're not going to make it,’ " Wells recalled.
For Martin, a mom of two herself, hearing the newborn cry was a special moment. "I think it’s music to your ears when you first hear the little baby cry," she said.
The Indian River County Sheriff's Office went on to share their own praise for Wells.
