A woman on Reddit is wondering if she’s in the wrong for reporting a co-worker who won’t stop making comments about her body.
In the post, shared to Reddit’s r/AmIOverreacting forum, the woman shares that she’s lost a significant amount of weight over the years, largely due to an unnamed “illness.” Despite her sickness taking a clear toll on her body, the woman has continued to show up to work on a regular basis.
However, one of her co-workers felt it necessary to continuously comment on her frail frame.
“One of my co-workers has been making comments that he calls ‘jokes’ to me,” the Reddit user writes. “He said things like to be careful outside so I don’t get blown away. He’s said to me ‘how do you carry anything with those twig arms of yours’. He’s been telling me to eat more and to ‘lose the diet’ so I don’t start fainting on the team.”
Though she initially brushed off these comments, they have “weighed negatively” on her and led to her feeling “self-conscious” over her changing body.
“He’s always just framed these as jokes and when I talked to him he told me to lighten up so that people want to work with me,” she continues.
The tipping point came when he commented on her breasts, which had also decreased in size from the illness-related weight loss.
“The last straw was when he was talking to me early in the morning with just us and ‘joked’ that my husband must miss me and motioned to his chest and said they’re not the same,” she shares. “Like what?? I had enough and I reported him later.”
Unfortunately, it seems that her decision to report him has led to some in-office tension — and not just with said co-worker.
“Now he barely talks to me. My other co-workers are being cold to me. One of them said I’m making a big deal [out] of nothing and told me to chill out,” she writes.
“I didn’t appreciate his ‘jokes’. Did I overreact?” she asks.
