Family of Hiker Found Dead After Falling Into Volcano Accuses Rescue Team of ‘Negligence’

NEED TO KNOW

  • Juliana Marins, 26, a Brazilian tourist, fell off a cliff down Indonesia’s Mount Rinjani on Saturday, June 21
  • Authorities said on Tuesday, June 24, that Marins’ body was discovered by teams from the Indonesian Search and Rescue Agency
  • “Juliana suffered great negligence on the part of the rescue team,” her family alleged in a social media post on Wednesday, June 25

The family of Juliana Marins, the Brazilian tourist who was found dead after she fell from a cliff during a hike on an active volcano in Indonesia, blamed the local search and rescue team for their loved one’s death.

“Juliana suffered great negligence on the part of the rescue team,” the family posted on social media on Wednesday, June 25, and shared by Brazilian broadcaster TV Globo.

“If the team had reached her within the estimated time of 7 hours, Juliana would still be alive,” the family’s post continued. “Juliana deserved much more! Now we are going to seek justice for her, because that is what she deserves! Don’t give up on Juliana!”

On Saturday, June 21, Marins, 26, fell from a cliff that surrounds a trail next to the crater of Mount Rinjani — a volcano that is more than 12,000 feet high — on the Indonesian island of Lombok, according to a translated statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil.

The fall occurred about 6:30 a.m. local time while she was en route to the peak, the Gunung Rinjani National Park stated in a previous news release.

After multiple days of searching, authorities announced on Tuesday, June 24, that her body had been found.

“After four days of work, made difficult by adverse weather, ground and visibility conditions in the region, teams from the Indonesian Search and Rescue Agency found the body of the Brazilian tourist,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil continued.

The department added, “The Brazilian government extends its condolences to the family and friends of the Brazilian tourist for the immense loss caused by this tragic accident.”

Marins’ family also confirmed her death in a statement posted to an Instagram account created to track recovery efforts.

“Today, the rescue team managed to reach the place where Juliana Marins was,” read a translated message. “With immense sadness, we inform you that she did not survive. We remain very grateful for all the prayers, messages of affection and support that we have received.”

On Wednesday, according to an Instagram post from Gunung Rinjani National Park, Marins’ body was evacuated from the site by a rescue team and later taken to Indonesia’s Bhayangkara Hospital.

“This evacuation involved cross-agency collaboration and volunteers, working in extreme terrain with unpredictable weather,” read the park’s Instagram post in part.

Her father Manoel Marins identified her daughter’s body, Brazilian newspaper Folha reported, adding that the Brazilian Embassy in Jakarta confirmed the information.

Manoel had previously said that the embassy has not been offering any support for the family. “The Brazilian government, which we’ve tried to contact, is also not helping us,” Marins told TV Globo, per The Daily Beast and Newsweek. “This is very sad and extremely serious. She is a 26-year-old girl, a Brazilian citizen, and no one—except family and friends—seems to care.”

Mariana’s family also alleged that the search and rescue team doctored a video of their loved one’s rescue, and that they received misleading claims that she was given food and water, The Daily Beast reported.

“The Indonesian government is lying, and the embassy is not verifying the facts before informing us,” said Juliana’s sister Marianna. “She is not receiving supplies.”

PEOPLE contacted the Brazilian government, the Brazilian embassy in Jakarta and the Indonesian government for comment on Wednesday.
