Even paradise has its storms.

On the July 14 episode of Bachelor in Paradise, Lexi Young decided to put a pause on her relationship with Justin Glaze due to concerns that he was too fresh out of his breakup four months prior. While he insisted that he only wanted to pursue her and prove that he was “serious,” they were surprised by a new arrival — his ex Susie Evans.

“I wouldn’t call it spiraling, but I wasn’t expecting that,” Lexi said of her reaction. “Now I’m stressing.”

Revealing the pair hadn’t seen each other since the time of their split, Justin pulled Susie for a conversation.

“I’ve just been in my head since I got here,” he explained. “I feel like seeing you, it’s a lot to process. It’s hard.”

Admitting that it was “overwhelming” to be face-to-face with Justin again, Susie began to cry.

“It’s hard to be here with him, but at the same time, it’s kind of comforting because I’ve never had anything like what Justin and I had,” she told cameras.

Later in the episode, Susie sat down with Lexi to assure her that she had no intentions of rekindling things with Justin.

After their discussion, Lexi revealed she was finally ready to continue exploring the connection.

“An entire weight was lifted off my shoulders,” she said. “And so I just really wanted to reassure him tonight and let him know that I am still in this, and I do still care.”

As she opened up to Justin about feeling more comfortable in their dynamic after talking to Susie, Lexi asked that they move forward together.

“If something comes up with that and you’re feeling a type of way, I just ask, if you’re having feelings about it, I don’t want you to think you can’t talk to me,” she noted, and Justin agreed.

“I do want to take Lexi for her word and trust her, because I am really interested in her,” he added in his confessional. “It will suck for me if things revert back to the anxious, retreating Lexi. I don’t want that. So I’m really hoping that she means everything that she said tonight, and I want to see if this can go somewhere.”

Moments later, Justin went to check in on Susie, who had gone on a date with Jeremy Simon.

While she said it went well, she also shared her fears that she didn’t have as much time as his other connection, Bailey, to earn his rose that night.

“I feel guilty because I feel like a main reason why this experience has been better for me is because of you,” Justin told Susie. “You have given me so much. You are always the one giving, right, and you’re always the one that’s getting the short end of the stick. And it’s f—— tough, you know? I don’t want to think back to me and you on my sofa, and we pinky promised to protect each other and make sure we’re good.”

“That means a lot,” she replied. “But I think that’s the truth is, before we ever dated we wanted to protect each other, and we had a friendship before anything.”

Justin left the conversation feeling “terrible” that Susie might go home and made a surprising decision.

When Jeremy gave his rose to Bailey at the rose ceremony, Justin gave his to Susie instead of Lexi.

“You mean the world to me,” he said. “I told you no matter what, I would protect you and have your back. You deserve it.”

Susie, however, tearfully declined: “I can’t accept the rose.”

Meanwhile, Lexi was processing her fear coming true. “I’ve just had this gut feeling the entire time that this would happen, but I decided to give it a shot because I had genuine feelings,” she admitted.

After thanking Justin for the gesture, Susie went back to the other women and held Lexi’s hand.

“I’m freaking out because I just don’t understand what’s going on,” she explained. “I feel like he was trying to sacrifice his position for me to stay and meet people next week. It just should have been, Justin gives his rose to Lexi, and I go home. Like, it’s fine.”

Suddenly, Justin walked out of the ceremony, leaving the rest of the cast in shock.

“I’m so sorry,” Susie told Lexi as the episode came to an end. “I’m gonna go talk to him because I know he’s just trying to do the right thing.”
