A man turns to the Reddit community for advice following a life-changing job offer that has sparked a major rift in his eight-year relationship.
The offer, which pays more than double his previous income, could finally help him escape a years-long struggle with financial instability and mental health issues, but it comes with one catch: weekend work.
“I’ve been in a financial hole for years now and this job would help bring me out of it,” he shared in a since-deleted post, explaining how deeply this opportunity could change his life. “I’ve been depressed for years due to finances. This would be life changing for me.”
The position, a restaurant manager for a popular franchise, offers a salary of over $60,000 a year and comes with full benefits — something he’s never had before. He admits that landing the job wasn’t easy, especially since his girlfriend had one firm condition: that he not work weekends.
“She’d rather have me make $40k a year for now if it means I get weekends off for us to spend together,” he explained. Despite the emotional weight of her ultimatum, he confesses that the need for financial security drove him to attend the interview anyway.
“Obvi she doesn’t want me having this job because of the weekend thing,” he continued, adding that she believes he could find something better that still fits a Monday-to-Friday schedule.
But the reality of their situation paints a different picture. The couple, both in their mid-to-late 20s, recently bought a house together, mostly at her urging, and are now both feeling the financial pressure that comes with homeownership.
“She pays most often the mortgage but I pay the electric, water, internet, etc.,” he explained. “Do all the cleaning, housework, yard, fixing up the house, etc.”
Despite the uneven financial split, he’s been actively contributing in every way he can.
The job offer seemed like the solution he had been searching for. Yet when he told her he wanted to accept it, her reaction was immediate and harsh. “She said we are done if I accept this job,” he revealed.
What’s clear is that her reaction has left him reeling. “She keeps saying I’m being unreasonable and choosing money over her,” he added, torn between financial survival and saving his relationship.
After reading responses from the Reddit community, he began to question his own perspective. “Okay after all these comments of her being the a—— I’m starting to feel bad now,” he admitted, showing just how conflicted he truly is.

He also acknowledged that she’s supported him financially in the past. “She’s always made more money than me and has supported me financially at times more than I’d like to admit,” he noted, offering insight into the power dynamics that may be at play.
But now, he believes it’s his turn to step up. “I just need a better job to help out more,” he wrote, pointing to the job offer as a much-needed chance to contribute equally.
Many commenters rallied behind him, urging him to prioritize his mental health and future. “Partners are there to lift you up, not hold you down,” one wrote, while another added, “She would rather you be poor. That is not right.”
The man appears to be caught in a moment that could define not only his career but his relationship.
