NEED TO KNOW
- The Gilded Age had its season 3 finale on Aug. 10
- The series takes inspiration from real-life figures in New York history, like Consuelo Vanderbilt
- Creator Julian Fellowes doesn’t have a “final stopping place” in mind for the show
Like George Russell’s trains, The Gilded Age keeps chugging along.
In season 3, ratings for the lavish period piece continued to climb each week, with 20% growth over season 2. The episodes concluded with a dramatic finale on Aug. 10.
So it came as no surprise in July 2025 when HBO renewed The Gilded Age for a “thrilling” season 4, per Francesca Orsi, executive vice president of HBO Programming and head of HBO drama series and films.
“We couldn’t be prouder of the undeniable viewership heights The Gilded Age has achieved this season,” Orsi said in a statement at the time. “Transporting us to 1880s New York City, Christopher Rudolph Julian Fellowes and the enormously talented cast and crew have created a ‘can’t-miss it’ entertainment experience from week to week.”
So, now that season 3 of The Gilded Age has ended, what’s next for the HBO drama? Here’s everything to know about The Gilded Age season 4.
Has The Gilded Age been renewed for season 4?
Yes, The Gilded Age has been renewed for a fourth season. HBO announced the news on July 28.
The confirmation came as the series continued to climb in ratings. According to Deadline, The Gilded Age was racking up numbers on par with other HBO hits like The Last of Us and The White Lotus.
In the season 4 renewal announcement, Erin Underhill, president of Universal Television, said, “Thanks to [Fellowes] and the phenomenally talented cast and crew, each season of The Gilded Age delivers stories rich in drama and history, stellar performances and stunning production value.”
“Every moment spent in this world and with these characters only deepens our love for the show,” Underhill added. “And we’re so happy that our partners at HBO and audiences around the world are clamoring for more.”
Which cast members are returning for The Gilded Age season 4?
It has not been confirmed which actors will be filling the opera boxes on the next season of The Gilded Age.
Season 3’s sprawling ensemble consisted of Carrie Coon, Morgan Spector, Cynthia Nixon, Christine Baranski, Louisa Jacobson, Taissa Farmiga, Harry Richardson, Denée Benton, Kelli O’Hara, Phylicia Rashad, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Ben Ahlers, Andrea Martin and many more.
Per Deadline, six new cast members were added for season 3: Dylan Baker, Kate Baldwin, John Ellison Conlee, Michael Cumpsty, Bobby Steggert and Hannah Shealy.
What have The Gilded Age creators said about season 4?
In July 2025, Fellowes told TV Insider he doesn’t have a “final stopping place” in mind when it comes to the end of the series.
Each season has to “have a satisfactory conclusion given what’s taken place within the series, but an open end where we may be going to,” the Downton Abbey creator explained. “That is the sort of double discipline that we write to, really.”
The drama has taken inspiration — and incorporated — real-life figures from history into its storylines, which could continue in the upcoming season.
Farmiga’s character, Gladys Russell, appears to be loosely inspired by Consuelo Vanderbilt. In season 3 of The Gilded Age, Gladys unhappily marries the Duke of Buckingham. The storyline is similar to Consuelo’s real life, as she wed Charles Spencer-Churchill, the ninth Duke of Marlborough, against her wishes.
Gladys’ parents, George and Bertha Russell, are also experiencing marriage problems. In real life, Consuelo’s parents, William and Alva Vanderbilt, divorced in 1895.
“Bertha is preemptively trying to make society comfortable for divorced women,” Coon told TV Insider in July 2025. “We know Bertha, we know that any effort she’s making is not entirely altruistic.”
“There’s always something self-serving in that effort,” the actress continued, adding that in season 4, “we would explore that possibility.”
When will The Gilded Age season 4 premiere?
Since season 3 just ended, a premiere date for the next season has not been announced.
Previously, in December 2023, HBO renewed The Gilded Age for a third season, which didn’t premiere until June 2025.
Where can I watch The Gilded Age?
The first three seasons of The Gilded Age are available to stream on HBO Max.
