Luciane Buchanan Is Not Returning for The Night Agent Season 3 After Writers Struggled to ‘Do Her Character Justice’

NEED TO KNOW

  • The Night Agent season 3 will not see Rose Larkin (Luciane Buchanan) return
  • The hit Netflix series follows rogue FBI agent Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso), who formed an unlikely bond with Rose (Buchanan) in episode 1
  • The actress teased that she could return for a cameo in the future and that it’s “not a goodbye forever”

Season 3 of The Night Agent will be missing one major star.

Luciane Buchanan has confirmed that she is not returning for the upcoming installment of the hit Netflix series. She played Rose Larkin, the unlikely sidekick of rogue FBI agent Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso) in the first two seasons of the series.

“As much as that show has been so amazing, especially for my career — being a lead on a U.S. show from little New Zealand was such a whirlwind — the writers decided that they wanted to follow Peter and his journey based on what happened at the end of Season 2,” she told Deadline.

Season 2 ended with Peter and Rose successfully thwarting an attack on the UN headquarters in New York City, but also with them parting ways, as Peter asked her not to come find him again for as long as he’s a Night Agent.

“We don’t get to see what happens to Rose,” Buchanan, 32, said of her exit. “But I think it’s a really exciting time for the show, and who knows, it’s not a goodbye forever.”

The actress, who can now be seen alongside Jason Momoa in Chief of War, told the outlet she found out she would not be returning for season 3 shortly after season 2 premiered in January.

“They were like, ‘We’ve been trying to find a way to bring [Rose] in, but we want to do her character justice and not make her a sub-character.’ I totally respected that decision and agreed. I was like, if it makes sense to a story, I’ll do that. If it doesn’t, let’s not force that.”

While Buchanan said she has “no idea” what’s to come for Peter in season 3, she said, “I’m sure it’s something super juicy. I can’t wait to watch.”

The actress is also not ruling out the possibility of reprising her role as Rose down the line. “If there is an opportunity that makes sense to the story for her to come back, I’m sure they’ll explore that, because they really loved the dynamics of Peter and Rose, and I know a lot of audiences loved that dynamic.”

“I’m sure Julia Moore Shawn Ryan and his team will find a little way,” she teased. “Maybe we’ll make a little cameo along the way.”

Ryan also shared a comment on Buchanan’s exit, telling Deadline, “We always envisioned the show as telling a new story each season with a revolving cast, and the story we broke for Season 3, much to our chagrin, didn’t have a satisfying place for Rose.”
