Officials in Florida have identified the body of an 18-year-old woman found floating in a canal after she was ejected from a motorcycle in an incident that injured three other people.

The remains belonged to Angelina Plasencia, the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office (MDSO) said in a statement on Tuesday, Sept. 16.

The sheriff’s office said that around 11:30 p.m. local time on Sunday, Sept. 14, deputies responded to a missing person report regarding Plasencia near NW 72 Avenue and NW 58 Street. MDSO Missing Persons Unit detectives searched the area but did not locate her.

The next morning, on Monday, Sept. 15, detectives returned to the area to continue investigating when they saw what appeared to be a body floating in a canal. MDSO divers arrived and retrieved it.

Sheriffs continued to investigate and found that multiple people in a vehicle had been involved in an accident at NW 74 Avenue and NW 58 Street.

“One of the occupants exited to check on the driver of the other vehicle. The remaining passengers fled the scene of the crash in the vehicle,” the sheriff’s office said. “Soon after, the same vehicle was involved in a second crash on the Northbound ramp of SR 826 at NW 58 Street. The occupants abandoned the vehicle, fled on foot and arranged to be picked up by a friend who was riding a motorcycle.”

Shortly after that, the motorcycle was involved in an incident at NW 72 Avenue and NW 58 Street that ejected all four occupants.

“Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded and transported a male and two females in critical condition to a local hospital,” the sheriff’s office said. “The fourth passenger of the motorcycle, who was the reported missing person found deceased, was identified as 18-year-old Ms. Angelina Plasencia.”

Authorities have not publicly identified the other three crash victims. Traffic homicide detectives from the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office are investigating.
