Woman Says Her Work Friend Is Giving Her the ‘Cold Shoulder’ After Eating the Last Doughnut

NEED TO KNOW

  • A woman says that her work friend gave her the “cold shoulder” after she ate the last doughnut at the office
  • She says she had no idea that her friend hadn’t had a pastry yet — but the friend remained mad anyway
  • The woman shared her story on a popular community forum, where the vast majority of commenters assured the poster that her friend was being “ridiculous”

A woman says that a work friend is genuinely mad that she ate the last doughnut at the office, and she’s now taking to the internet to figure out who’s in the wrong.

The woman detailed her story on the popular Reddit forum “Am I the A——,” where Redditors go to seek advice about interpersonal dilemmas. In her post, the woman shared that she recently made a new friend at work.

“She’s been great, and we refer to each other as ‘work sisters,’ ” she added.

The original poster (OP) went on to explain that her company buys the office doughnuts from a local bakery every Friday. On the most recent doughnut day, the woman said that a second coworker — who she calls “Hubert” — stopped by her desk and told her that the doughnuts were “going quick.”

She said that she and Hubert went and grabbed the last two doughnuts, at which point her “work sister” came in and asked why the OP hadn’t saved her one. She also said that the work friend also claimed that Hubert had already had a doughnut that day.

The OP said she told her coworker that she didn’t know Hubert had already eaten a pastry and that there were only two left when she got there. But regardless of that, her friend gave her the “cold shoulder the rest of the day.”

“I thought she was being ridiculous until a mutual friend sided with her and said I should have at least asked,” she continued, before asking, “Am I the a——?”

The vast majority of commenters said that they thought the OP’s work friend had overreacted.

“NTA [not the a——]. You are not the donut police, and it’s not your job to check who already had a donut,” one person said.

Someone else said, “She sounds childish. Firstly, it’s just embarrassing to act like this over a donut. And secondly, if she is really that upset over not getting a donut, then she should ask Hubert why he ate [hers] instead of directing [her anger] towards you. Ridiculous behavior from your work sister.”

Someone else said, “NTA. Is your coworker a 5-year-old?”

The OP added a follow-up to her original post after reading the comments from her fellow Redditors.

“I wanna thank everyone for the support,” she said. “I completely agree it’s childish. The only reason I gave it any bit of second thought is because she had someone backing her up. […] I’m thinking I shouldn’t have second-guessed myself.”
