After more than 40 years since the original film premiered, TRON is getting another sequel with TRON: Ares.
In the third installment, rather than entering the digital world, a program called Ares attempts to enter the human world. It will be the first TRON movie in 15 years, following 2010’s sequel TRON: Legacy.
Star of the follow-up film, Garrett Hedlund, told Collider in 2024 that he was looking forward to what’s in store for Ares, saying, “I’m very excited for Tron: Ares coming to fruition.” He continued, “I’m very excited about what that’s gonna bring not only the Tron fan base, but the world of The Grid.”
He also teased at potentially revisiting his character from Legacy, saying, “And who knows? Maybe it’s not the last anyone will see of Sam and Quorra.”
The new film sees Jeff Bridges reprise his role as Kevin Flynn, alongisde new star Jared Leto, whotold Entertainment Tonight in 2024, “I was a massive fan of TRON as a kid. When I was a kid, I wanted to live in the Grid.”

Who is starring in TRON: Ares?
Bridges, who starred in the original TRON and 2010’s TRON: Legacy, will reprise his role as Flynn for the third time.
He will be joined by Leto, who plays the titular Ares, as well as Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan and Gillian Anderson.
What is TRON: Ares about?
The official plot synopsis provided by Disney says, “TRON: Ares follows a highly sophisticated Program, Ares, who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings.”
At 2024’s D23 event, the cast of Ares gave more details about their characters and the plot.
In a video taken by Deadline, Peters said his character’s last name is Dillinger, “which doesn’t always mean great things for those on the grid,” referencing how Dillinger was the antagonist in the first film who tried to steal Flynn’s work.
Lee then took the mic and said she plays a programmer named Eve, “whose greatest work provides the path for Ares to come into our world.” Finally, Leto let the audience know that he plays Ares, “a program who’s looking for a way to make the real world his own, permanently.”
Is there a trailer for Tron: Ares?
Fans who attended Disney’s D23 event got to see a sneak preview of the film, and the official trailer was released on July 17, 2023.
After the movie’s sneak peek at D23, which showed Leto in his TRON suit, the actor spoke to PEOPLE saying, “They built an amazing suit. I think I probably could have used the suit in the real world in certain circumstances, like wearing a piece of armor head to toe. It’s about 45 pounds, but still flexible. But when you put it on, you feel like a warrior — and Ares, like the name, is indeed a warrior.”
Leto gave everyone another glimpse at his TRON: Ares costume when he posted a still from the movie on his Instagram, writing, “ ARE YOU READY?? TRON: ARES 2025 See you on the grid…”
Who is doing the soundtrack for Tron: Ares?
One of the highlights of TRON: Legacy was the hit soundtrack composed by Daft Punk. For Ares, Nine Inch Nails will be composing the soundtrack, bringing their iconic industrial rock sound to the Grid.
The band revealed the news on Instagram in August 2024, sharing a reel with the caption, “You’re going to get what you deserve. 10.10.25.”
The band is currently composed of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, and the duo have previously composed the scores for other hit films like Challengers (2024), Bird Box (2018) and the Oscar and Golden Globe-winning Soul (2020).
Where was TRON: Ares filmed?
According to The Hollywood Reporter, TRON: Ares was filmed in Vancouver, Canada. Production began in early 2024 after being delayed by the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strikes.
TRON: Ares director Joachim Rønning later revealed on his Instagram that filming wrapped in May 2024.
The filmmaker posted a BTS photo with the caption, “That’s a wrap on TRON: ARES. Thanks to an incredible and tireless crew, I really believe we pushed the filmmaking limits on this movie. Even through six weeks of night shoots you never slowed down. Also, a big thank you to our wonderful cast for leaving everything on screen. I can’t wait to show the world what we’ve done.”
When will TRON: Ares be released?
Disney has announced that Tron: Ares will hit theaters on Oct. 10, 2025.
Where can I watch the TRON franchise?
The TRON franchise has seen a resurgence in recent years, giving fans lots to do and explore before Ares premieres on Oct. 10. Both Shanghai Disneyland and Disney World in Florida have TRON Lightcycle roller coasters that let riders zip through the grid on the film’s iconic neon lightcycles.
That same year TRON received a video game for PC and the Nintendo Switch called TRON: Identity, which takes place after the first two movies. The game is set in a different grid where the programs have been left on their own to create and sustain their digital world without the influence of humans.
Fans who really want to dive deeper into the franchise’s lore and characters can also check out the animated series TRON: Uprising (2012-2013), which is streaming on Disney+, and the video game TRON: Evolution (2010), which serves as a prequel to the film TRON: Legacy.
