Zac Brown is reflecting on how he surprised fiancée Kendra Scott when he popped the question.
In an interview with Fox News published on Sunday, Oct. 5, the musician, 47, revealed new details about his surprise proposal to the jewelry designer, 51. The couple exclusively announced their engagement to PEOPLE on July 24.
“Kendra’s such an amazing human being. We share so much in the way we love our family, the way we protect our people and our business, the way that we fight for good things in our philanthropy, the way that we choose to try to help each other. I had to figure out a way to do it,” Brown told the outlet of his surprise proposal plan.
The lead singer of the Zac Brown Band continued, “So, we were actually on a river. And on a barge with 30 elephants on the bank and the sun setting and birds flying over and hippos in the water. And I got it good.”
Brown and Scott have both previously been married and between them have eight children.
“It’s not our first go-around, but it’s definitely so much different than anything I’ve experienced before,” Brown told Fox News. “And I’m so grateful that we found each other and that we can relate to being leaders. We can relate and support each other on a level that just hasn’t happened before, so I love her heart.”
The “Chicken Fried” singer said he’d love his “dynamic and extraordinary” fiancée even if she wasn’t a “business mogul.” The pair “learn a lot from being together” and look forward to blending their families after they tie the knot.
“We put our family first, and that’s the most important thing,” Brown said. “I’m so excited for her and her kids and my kids, everybody, for us to be a family together is such a blessing, man.”
He added that their children are all “very different,” yet “extraordinary” and “incredible in their own individual ways.”
“So it’s just a super, super blessing for us to have a harmony together within our families and be centered around that and just to have a life partner that’s on the same page, and we can support each other and help each other with our dreams and help to like… maybe weed out and say no so we have more time to just lay back and enjoy life,” Brown said.
Brown and Scott made their relationship debut at the American Music Awards in May. At the time, a source told PEOPLE they had been dating for several months.
“They were set up by a mutual friend, and are totally in love,” the source said of the duo. “They are head over heels and have become inseparable.”
During his appearance on the Today show back in July, Brown opened up about his surprise proposal and joked about the pressure to buy the perfect engagement ring for Scott.

“What are you gonna get somebody that designs jewelry?” Brown said of the daunting task of finding the perfect ring for someone who designs jewelry for a living. “But it’s incredible, incredible. So happy … We’re so happy we found each other and we’re blessed.”
He added, “It just adds so much energy to everything else. More to give to music, more to give to our families and everything, so we’re blessed.”
