How someone treats waitstaff can be an important indicator of who they are as a person — and one woman recently learned this the hard way.
On Reddit, the 20-year-old shared that she recently broke up with her 22-year-old boyfriend due to his shocking behavior at a nice restaurant for their three-month anniversary.
“We’re both in college and very broke so this is our first time going somewhere expensive,” she explained. “The waiter came and poured glasses of water for us, and when he was pouring my bf’s some spilled on the table. It wasn’t very much and none of it got on my bf.”
However, her boyfriend “immediately made a scene, yelled at the waiter, and asked to talk to a manager.”
Her boyfriend told the manager that the waiter had spilled water on him and demanded something free for the inconvenience, despite there not being any truth to his complaint.
Both the waiter and manager apologized and offered them a free dessert, but the woman said that “the rest of the night was so awkward.”
After the meal, she broke up with him because she “knew he lied,” and, more importantly, she felt that “the way he yelled at the waiter was completely unnecessary.”
“He apologized to me and said he knew he shouldn’t have lied but he thought it was a way he could afford the dinner for us. I told him it was actually less about the lying and more that he’d yell and talk down to someone just to get something for himself,” she wrote.
Although he has been trying to convince her to take him back, the woman noted that she is still “really uncomfortable” with the whole ordeal.
People in the comments section assured the woman that she did the right thing.
“Cringe. Great job for dumping him,” one person wrote.
“You did the right thing. It’s not just about how someone treats you but it’s how they treat others,” another added, noting that they simply “have different thoughts about integrity” and values.
