Love can sometimes feel like you're under a spell.

Ahead of Valentine's Day, PEOPLE spoke with Etsy witch SpellsByMia about the dos and don'ts of love spells. While some people are rushing to improve their love lives before the big day, Mia insists that “there isn’t really a perfect timing for love spells.”

“People usually buy during emotional shifts, after a breakup, when a relationship feels stagnant or when they are ready to call in a soulmate,” Mia shares. “I always say it’s less about when and more about your intentions. And most importantly, finding a practitioner you genuinely trust and vibe with."

"Everyone who buys spells should feel safe, supported and never pressured," she says.

She warns that, when procuring a spell, both parties need to be aware of “what kind of magic they are working with.”

“Not all practitioners work the same way, and not all magic respects free will,” Mia warns, adding that the biggest thing to avoid is "trying to force an outcome.”

“I only work with white magic, so free will is always respected," she says. "Love should never be controlled or manipulated. If someone returns, it needs to be because the feelings are real, not because their energy has been overpowered.”

Mia shares that “real magic isn’t about control.”

“It’s about alignment, honesty and allowing love to flow where it’s meant to, rather than trapping it where it isn’t," she adds.

Mia also acknowledges that Valentine’s Day is “very emotional” and warns people not to "stalk or chase the outcome."

“Focus on self-love rituals, sweetening energy and heart healing," she tells PEOPLE. "A glamour spell would be gorgeous to cast during this lovey-dovey time."
