The fatal incidents come after several deaths in the Lake Tahoe region in recent days.

On Wednesday, Feb. 18, the body of missing 21-year-old college student Colin Kang, of Fremont, was found in the area of Northstar California Resort.

Kang had “Gone skiing and did not return as expected,” the Placer County Sheriff’s Office shared in a news release on Facebook. His vehicle was found in a parking lot at Northstar California Resort before he was later discovered.

Kang was the third person to die this month at the North Shore resort, located between Truckee and Lake Tahoe.

On Feb. 17, at least eight other people were killed after an avalanche struck the backcountry near Lake Tahoe. The incident marks one of the deadliest avalanches in California’s history.

The DCSO did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for further comment.
