A now-deceased U.S. State Department employee has been named the suspect in a fatal road rage incident.

In a media release on Monday, March 2, the Virginia State Police named 32-year-old Jared Llamado as the suspect in a fatal stabbing and officer-involved shooting that occurred at approximately 1:20 p.m. local time on Sunday, March 1.

Fairfax County is about 30 minutes from Washington, D.C., per Fox News.

A Virginia State Police trooper was called to the scene on March 1 for a reported "road rage incident," authorities said in their release.

"When the trooper arrived on scene, he was confronted by a male suspect carrying a knife," the media release continued. "The trooper then shot the suspect in self-defense."

While the trooper was not injured, he was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation. Llamado was transported to the hospital with "serious injuries" and later died, police said.

Four stabbing victims were also located at the scene, including Michele Adams, 39, who succumbed to her injuries. Police said that a dog owned by Llamado was also stabbed and died.

The other three victims, who were not identified, were described as a 36-year-old female, a 37-year-old female, and a 40-year-old female who were all taken to area hospitals with "serious injuries."

A preliminary investigation indicates that Llamado did not know the victims before the incident and that none of the victims were in Llamado’s vehicle, police said.

According to the Virginia State Police, the preliminary investigation also showed that the stabbings followed a crash on Interstate 495 southbound, which remains under investigation. It is unclear what led to the stabbings.

A U.S. State Department spokesperson confirmed to PEOPLE that they are aware of the "tragic incident that involved a Foreign Service Officer."

"We extend our deepest condolences to all those affected by this tragedy," the spokesperson said, noting that the investigation is being led by the Virginia State Police.
