Biden was at the airport but not present during the accidental shooting, USSS spokesperson Nate Herring tells PEOPLE.
The shooting occurred just after 8:30 a.m. and the agent "suffered a non-life-threatening injury following a negligent discharge while handling a service weapon," according to Herring. No one else was injured.
The agent was given medical assistance at the airport and was transported to a nearby hospital, where he is in stable condition.
"The Secret Service’s Office of Professional Responsibility will be reviewing the facts and circumstances of this incident," Herring says.
A spokesperson for the former first lady declined to offer additional comment to PEOPLE.
