Jackie Tohn tells PEOPLE how her longtime friend and costar showed up for her

Jackie Tohn is sharing her appreciation for friend and costar Kristen Bell.
While celebrating Netflix’s Nobody Wants This at a PaleyFest LA panel event on Thursday, April 8, series star Tohn spoke with PEOPLE about a time when Bell showed up for her after a late-night argument with a boyfriend.
“My boyfriend and I, he was staying at my house… we got in a big fight and it was like 11:30 at night,” Tohn says. “And I just texted her and she was like, ‘The front door’s open.’”
She adds, “I just snuck out and I left and I snuck into her house at 11:30 at night and went into the guest bedroom and it was like all set up for me in there. There’s really never any questions with her.”

For Tohn, the example came to mind when thinking of the times Bell, 45, had her back during their decades-long friendship. “I’m just like, ‘Hey, I need this,’ and she’s like, ‘I’m on my way,’” Tohn says of her friend. “And same with her, no matter what our crazy schedules are.”
The bond between the two actresses goes back years, as Bell previously called Tohn her “first friend in Los Angeles.” Tohn is also close with Bell and husband Dax Shepard’s children, often joking that she’s more than just an honorary aunt. Shepard and Bell are parents to daughters Lincoln, 13, and Delta, 11.
“I tell them all the time that they’re actually my birth children,” she says. “I’m like, ‘It’s so funny, you look just like these Dax and Kristen people, but I carried you both.’”

Tohn and Bell have been open about their friendship journey over the years, with Bell calling Tohn her "most loyal, most creative, and most hilarious" friend in a 2018 Instagram post. The pair met over two decades ago doing black box theater in Los Angeles, Bell previously shared.
"I cannot tell you how many times we have laughed until we peed making up nicknames for dogs we see on the street, or lip reading conversations from a distance between norm-core individuals on the hiking trail," Bell wrote in 2018. "They dont make em like @jackietohn very often. So when you find one, you gotta hold on tight."
Tohn appears as Esther Roklov in Nobody Wants This and Bell plays Joanne Williams. While the characters don't always see eye-to-eye in the series, the actresses who play them have remained tight — with Tohn telling PEOPLE that she sometimes feels like "a member of that family."
"[There has] been random stuff going on lately, and they called me and they were like, 'You're coming to family dinner,'" Tohn says. "And I was like, 'On my way.' 'You need to sit at this table with us.' 'Coming!'"
