An Atlanta-area high school community is mourning the loss of a 16-year-old football player after what the school says was a “long, courageous battle” with Guillain-Barré syndrome, pneumonia and lupus.

Loganville High School announced the death of high schooler Gunnar Redding Bible last week on behalf of his family, according to local WSBTV, Fox 5 Atlanta, and Atlanta News First.

“Please join us in keeping the family and our community in your thoughts and prayers,” the school posted on Facebook while announcing the 16-year-old football player’s death.

“After a long and courageous battle, Gunnar transitioned Wednesday,” the post read. “Thank you, Gunna, for your strength, your heart, and the impact you made on our team and our community. You will never be forgotten.”

Bible’s mother Teresa Redding shared in a GoFundMe post last month that her son “was admitted to [the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta hospital and] diagnosed with Guillain-Barré, pneumonia, and lupus.”

“He is only 16, has been an athlete his entire life, and now he is incapable of moving his limbs,” his mother wrote, asking the community for help to cover her son’s medical bills. “He has been on a respirator since admission.”

According to the Mayo Clinic, Guillain-Barré is "a condition in which the body's immune system attacks the nerves, and "can cause weakness, numbness or paralysis." Lupus, an autoimmune condition, causes "the body's immune system attacks its own tissues and organs," the Mayo Clinic states.

The family has raised more than $7,000 since Redding first launched the fundraiser for her son, who was left only “able to communicate with blinks” as his condition worsened in recent weeks. Redding also wrote that her late son also experienced kidney complications during his hospitalization.
