Woman Charged After Leaving Her 3-Year-Old in a Car Alone for 2 Hours. Child Taken to Hospital and Now in Critical Condition

A woman has been charged with a first-degree felony after leaving her child alone in the car for two hours.

Latana Williams, 27, was arrested after her 3-year-old child was found left unattended in her car for about two hours while she went to donate plasma. Her child was found in critical condition and transported to the hospital on Sunday, May 31.

"The DeLand Fire Department and Volusia County Fire Rescue responded to the scene, where a witness had already begun administering CPR prior to the arrival of first responders," a press release from the DeLand Police Department read.

"The child was transported by ground to a local hospital in critical condition," they added.

Williams was charged with child neglect, which is a first-degree felony. She has denied any wrongdoing. Authorities said that her child's outlook appeared positive, but also shared a reminder about vehicle safety.

"Please take this as a reminder to always check your back seats," Captain P. Dice said. "Give yourself enough time when you're traveling so you're not in a rush when you arrive at your destination."

The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is asked to contact the DeLand Police Department.
