Many of the Hurricanes' top players are fathers off the ice

On the ice, the Carolina Hurricanes conquer fast-paced pucks and tough opponents. But at home, many of the NHL players take on another arena: parenthood.
And athletes like K'Andre Miller wouldn't have it any other way. Miller welcomed his first child, Kashton, with girlfriend Addison Clark on May 2. Less than a month later, he brought him onto the team bench during an emotional celebration of the Hurricanes' advancing to the Stanley Cup Final.
“Getting to go home to the little guy after a game and getting to see him smile is a dream come true,” Miller told NHL reporters.
Miller isn’t the only father on the roster. Jordan Martinook shares three children with his wife, Courtney Martinook, while head coach Rod Brind'Amour’s son plays on the team himself.

Jaccob Slavin's 2 Kids

Defenseman Jaccob Slavin and his wife Kylie's love story started like many modern romances do: on social media. In the nearly 11 years since Jaccob shot his shot with a direct message on X, they’ve welcomed two children together.
In 2019, they adopted their daughter Emersyn. In 2022, Kylie gave birth to their son, Charlie.
“He’s a little peanut,” Jaccob wrote in his social media birth announcement.

K’Andre Miller's 1 Kid

In April, Carolina Hurricanes defenseman K’Andre Miller and his girlfriend of four years, Addison Clark, announced they were expecting their first baby in a post captioned, “A bond that lasts forever.”
On May 2, 2026, their baby boy Kashton arrived, and “life hasn’t been the same since,” Miller wrote. “We’re completely in love and soaking in this new chapter.”

Shayne Gostisbehere's 1 Kid

Defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere and his wife Gina met at Union College and have been a winning off-ice team ever since. In January 2025, the duo added a new member to the roster: their baby boy, Dax.
For an NHL couple, a baby born mid-season made for tight scheduling. After Gina’s C-section, Shayne headed off for a game that same night. Then, he hit the road for the few days following.
But the couple said it’s worth the chaos.
“I still pinch myself that I’m a dad and that Gina’s a mom,” Shayne said to Fanduel press the day of Dax's birth. “After this game, it’s not just about me anymore, it’s about Dax.”

Sebastian Aho's 1 Kid

Sebastian Aho and his wife, Rosa, added to the growing storm of Hurricanes families when they welcomed their daughter in 2025.
“I'm so happy that I got to be there and timing-wise it worked out,” Aho told Fox Sports of his daughter’s birth, which occurred in the midst of the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs. “(Rosa) did an amazing job, and I’m really, really proud of her.”
Aho said his fellow dad-teammates offered up words of wisdom as he skated into this next chapter. “They all said, ‘Your life's going to change,'” he added. "And for sure it did — you hold your baby the first time, it's the best feeling in the world."

Taylor Hall's 2 Kids

Taylor Hall married his wife, Rachel, in 2022, and the two have welcomed two sons in the years since: Stetson and Chance.
On Oct. 8, 2023, Rachel gave birth to Stetson Rush Hall. “I feel like the luckiest person in the world to be Stetson's mama,” Rachel wrote in a birthday tribute. “Don’t know what we did to deserve such a perfect little man.”
Nearly two years later, on Sept. 29, 2025, the family welcomed their younger addition, Chance Henry Hall.

Jordan Staal's Kids

Hurricanes captain Jordan Staal and his wife, Heather, have been married since 2012. The two share three living children: daughters Abigail and Lilah and son Henry. In 2018, they tragically lost their third daughter, Hannah, to a terminal birth defect.
"While we prayed for a miracle, or even a few more minutes with her, she came into this world stillborn," Staal said in a statement. "My wife and I have been absolutely amazed by the support we've received from our friends, family and the whole hockey community."
And while the captain is a star on the ice, being a good dad is the real win for him.
"Knowing that they're watching you every day and learning from you is something I take pride in," Staal told the Raleigh News and Observer in 2021. "It's been an absolute blessing and I love being a dad."

Jordan Martinook's Kids

Hurricanes left wing Jordan Martinook has been married to his wife, Courtney, since 2016. The two share at least two children, who were both born during Jordan’s time with the Hurricanes.
"I've had both my kids here now. That's a monumental life event,” Martinook told NHL press after the birth of his second child. “That's something that will always hold Raleigh dear to me.”
Although the Martinooks keep their children’s lives private, Jordan said parenthood has shifted his perspective.
“The most eye-opening part of being a parent is that it’s not all about you any more,” he told the NHL Players Association in 2019. “You have to take care of another person, and you think of yourself second.”

Rod Brind'Amour's 4 Kids

Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind’Amour is the proud father of four children.
He shares his oldest three children — daughter Briley, son Skyler and son Reece — with his first wife, Kelle. He shares his youngest son, Brooks, with his current wife, Amy.
As a hockey coach, it was the ultimate win for his family when Skyler — a professional hockey player— signed with the Carolina Hurricanes in 2024.
Skyler plays center and forward, and the father-son duo say their relationship doesn't get in the way of the sport.
"In the heat of it, he's trying to prove himself, and we're just trying to get through a day here," Rod said after coaching Skyler's first Hurricanes game, per ESPN. "But it was nice … a nice moment."
