Mandy Moore is getting candid about her previous journey with IVF.
Moore, 42, appeared on the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast on Tuesday, June 2, where she discussed her experience with the fertility treatment. While she was able to conceive her first two sons naturally, she chose to undergo IVF as "an insurance policy" to allow flexibility to keep an embryo "on ice" until she was ready to have her third baby with husband Taylor Goldsmith, she explained.
"So, I did a round of IVF, and it was unsuccessful, we didn't get any viable eggs, no embryos," Moore shared. "And I was like okay, well this just settles that. If this is something that is meant to be, it will happen naturally."
The actress and musician added that she is "so grateful and so happy with these two guys," referring to her two sons August "Gus" Harrison Goldsmith, 5, and Oscar "Ozzie" Bennett Goldsmith, 3.
"And then Lou just had to show up," Moore joked of her third baby, Louise "Lou" Goldsmith, whom she and her husband welcomed in 2024.
"And she showed up very, very surprisingly," Moore continued. "We were not trying, but obviously we were open to it because of the IVF of it all."
Moore previously spoke about her fertility struggles in a 2024 Instagram post on the This Was Us podcast account, writing that prior to her first pregnancy, "The doctor told me there was a slim chance of getting pregnant… and then lo and behold to our surprise, I became pregnant with Gus."

Lou and Ozzie are just under two years apart, Moore explained. "I had three kids in three-and-a-half years," she said with a sigh.
When asked if she felt that giving birth to her three children in quick succession "took a toll" on her, Moore replied that she is "still emotionally recovering."
"I do feel lucky that energetically, pregnancy was very easy for me," Moore said. "I didn't suffer from any sort of postpartum symptoms and stuff, so I feel like I had a relatively easy journey all things considered."

In May 2025, she celebrated her first Mother's Day as a mom of three and shared a sweet message about motherhood in an Instagram carousel.
"Being a mom is the single greatest gift of my life and while you're never off the clock worrying or stressing or planning, the quiet, unmistakable joy triumphs over everything else," she wrote. "I'm endlessly grateful to the moms in my life who model what it takes, lend an ear, make the best suggestions, and generally make me feel less alone on the journey."
