Three people have been hospitalized after their boat suddenly capsized near Chicago.

On Monday, Aug. 3, the Chicago Fire Department’s scuba team responded to a report of a vessel sinking on Lake Michigan at around 7 p.m. local time, a spokesperson told the Chicago Sun-Times

Officials said the boat, which was carrying seven people, was sailing near the 4400-block of South DuSable Lake Shore Drive in Chicago’s Kenwood neighborhood before it capsized, per ABC7 Chicago.

The vessel was approximately 20 yards away from the shoreline when it began sinking, a Chicago Fire Department spokesperson told the Chicago Sun-Times.

All seven people were pulled out of the water. Three were taken to local hospitals in good condition, but the other four refused medical assistance, CBS News reported.

Lake Michigan averages around 279 feet in depth, according to The Great Lakes Commission. It reaches 925 feet at its deepest point.

The incident follows the death of a 26-year-old woman after a 33-foot cabin cruiser motorboat collided with a smaller boat on Lake Michigan, leaving four injured.

First responders were called to the scene of the crash near Chicago’s Monroe Harbor just before midnight local time on June 25, after they received a report of multiple injuries, according to an Illinois Conservation Police release.
