  • The stars of the original Lord of the Rings trilogy — including Sean Astin, Elijah Wood, Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd — reunited for dinner in Massachusetts
  • “The band’s all here,” Astin wrote alongside a rare photo of the former costars
  • Decades after the four actors played the hobbits in the iconic trilogy, Wood is expected to reprise his role in Andy Serkis’ upcoming film, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum

The stars of the original Lord of the Rings trilogy look unrecognizable as they reunite 23 years after their last film together.

On Saturday, Aug. 8, Sean Astin shared a photo of himself sitting outside at La Royal restaurant in Cambridge, Mass., alongside his former costars Billy Boyd, Elijah Wood and Dominic Monaghan.

“The band’s all here,” the Goonies star, 55, wrote in the caption.

Hours later, Monaghan, 49, shared another goofy selfie from their reunion, in which a couple could be seen successfully photobombing the pic as they sat at a neighboring table.

“Four Halflings. Three cocktails. Two desserts. ONE great night of conversation,” he captioned the post. “More to come. #becurious shoutout to the couple in the back. Well played.”

In the acclaimed fantasy series, the four actors played unassuming hobbits Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin, who set off on the journey of a lifetime after Frodo is tasked with destroying the One Ring to Rule Them All. The last The Lord of the Rings movie was released in 2003.

Years later, Wood, 45, made a brief cameo as Frodo in 2012’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. He will also star in Andy Serkis’ upcoming film The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, alongside Ian McKellen, who will reprise his role as Gandalf, and Lee Pace as Thranduil.

While speaking to the BBC about the upcoming film, which is expected to be released in December 2027, the director, 62, revealed that The Hunt for Gollum will be “very much a deep dive into the psychology and history of Gollum before he became Gollum, but also with a very burning question from Gandalf about what the potential origin of this ring that Bilbo Baggins has is.”

“The hunt takes place in two different dimensions really and that’s about as far as I can say at the moment,” the director continued.

While the foursome’s rise to fame skyrocketed after their roles in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Astin admitted to The Guardian last month that the back-to-back films didn’t necessarily help their wallets.

“I was not prepared for that level of visibility and access,” he said. “And there was a disconnect between the attention that I was getting and how much money we had. It was not a lot of money! In fact, I had to sell my house because I negotiated such a small amount on the trilogy.”
