La La Land is a permanent fixture in my brain at this point.
The film first premiered nearly a decade ago on August 31, 2016, and yet, here I am still as transfixed by Emma Stone’s glorious wardrobe as I was on day one. Case in point: I can’t think about the movie without recalling images of swingy yellow dresses, soft blue sweaters, and all the colors.
And since it’s being re-released in select theaters on August 16, I decided to take a walk — no, waltz — down memory lane and call out my favorites. And spoiler: They’re still very much “in” today.

Ofeefan Puff-Sleeve Square-Neck Dress

$39 $27 at Amazon
The yellow dress is probably the most recognizable outfit of Mia Dolan’s (a.k.a Stone’s character), and that’s because it’s the one featured on the movie poster. (Which, by the way, Lionsgate hilariously tweaked for the anniversary!) It was also, in my opinion, the best possible choice for the dance scene with her and Ryan Gosling. It moved beautifully, popped against the background of the purple night sky, and looked so classy.
Fortunately, this dress from Amazon is just as bold and statement-making. It has puff sleeves for even more coverage than Stone’s (a personal preference of mine!), as well as a figure-skimming silhouette that hugs the upper body, then flares out. And while there is no floral pattern, there’s a pretty bow in the back.

I also think about Stone’s blue dress often. It’s fun and flirty but not too over the top, and the color? It’s one I’ve been seeing pop up more and more, especially in the last year or so.
For a similar option, I found this Grace Karin gem that’s belted at the waist and comes in the same royal blue hue. It also has a V-neck design, though it’s not as low-cut, meaning you can wear it for more than a night out. It “looks expensive” and stays wrinkle-free, according to one reviewer. They said they “packed it in luggage to bring on a work trip, and it came out of the bag ready to wear,” without ironing it.

Outside of dresses, Stone’s blue sweater stands out the most to me. It’s so casual compared to many of her other outfits, which feels fitting for her character arc.
Since sweaters are easy to come by, I quickly spotted a lookalike at Amazon — this V-Neck pick from Zeagoo. The light blue and the ribbed hems are spot-on, and, bonus, the price is right. I’d layer it with a white T-shirt, then pair it with some denim for an even closer match that I could wear once it’s fall.
