Authorities in southern Spain have launched an investigation into the fatal stabbing of a woman visiting the area.
The victim, a 47-year-old whose name has not been released to the public, was found deceased on the Punta del Caimán beach in Isla Cristina, a city in the Spanish province of Huelva, on Aug. 21, local outlets Huelva Información, EFE and El País reported, citing police.
Investigators arrested a 60-year-old man, whom the outlets identified as her partner.
On the morning of Aug. 21, the 112 Andalusia Emergency Service responded to a report of a woman who was not moving, authorities told the outlets.
Agents found the woman on the beach with nearly 20 stab wounds, Huelva Información reported, citing sources. The suspect was reportedly still at the scene and had a knife in his hand.
The woman was of German nationality and the suspect is Italian, according to Huelva Información, EFE and El País, but it wasn’t immediately clear where they were visiting from.
Sources told Huelva Información that the couple were traveling in a camper van.
Police have not commented on a possible motive behind the gruesome slaying. The investigation is being regarded as gender-based, the outlets reported.

The Civil Guard has assumed responsibility of the investigation, with the agency telling Huelva Información that while police have made an arrest, they are keeping “all hypotheses” open about the alleged crime.
