  • The couple maintained a friendship for years before marrying in 2000
  • Grant credits Gill’s perspective and support, especially after her 2022 brain injury, as vital to their relationship

Amy Grant is opening up about her love story with Vince Gill.

On Tuesday, Sept. 1, the “Baby, Baby” singer appeared on the Human School Podcast and detailed her love for Gill.

“We got together because he was the kindest person I ever met and I was so attracted to him. I fell in love with him. I couldn’t un-know his kindness,” Grant, 65, said of Gill, 69.

She continued, “We worked together. I was married. He was married. And all I know to say is I couldn’t un-know what it felt like to feel that kind of respect.”

After Grant met Gill, she felt like his kindness and authenticity “tilted my world on its axis.” However, it wasn’t until seven years later — and “a long five years of slowly derailing” — that they got married.

“I would just say that marriage is the giant rock tumbler,” she said. “Its been such a great experience of sort of navigating another human being — and his life is his life. Our lives are beside each other.”

“The physical things that have happened to me, they have not happened to him. The opportunities that have come to him, they have not come to me,” she said. “That respect I felt in him from the beginning has been one of the most wonderful things, to learn to live respectfully alongside somebody else.”

Gill and Grant met in 1993 and maintained a friendship through the years. They tied the knot in March 2000.

In November 2024, the pair opened up to PEOPLE about how their love came to be — and said there was nothing “orchestrated.”

“It was like life orchestrated that we kept crossing paths,” she said. “Life is full of all kinds of mysteries. And I’m not saying any of us did it all wrong or all right, but what we’ve experienced is just so much grace and forgiveness for each other and for our first families and our second families, and it is possible to reconcile. It’s possible to mend fences.”

At the time, Gill said that the first thing he noticed about Grant was her smile.

“That’s all I can remember. It was a staggering smile that just stopped me in my tracks. And that had never happened to me before like that,” he said.

In April, Grant went on NPR’s Wild Card with Rachel Martin and shared the wisdom that Gill imparted to her after she sustained a brain injury in 2022.

“I just remember in the fall of 2022 when my world was very quiet. I just remember saying to Vince, ‘What if this is all I get back? What if this is it?’ Because, to me, it’s like the world is in a conversation, and I am down the hall and in a back bedroom. This is like my response time,” Grant said.

Then, Gill put things into perspective for her and said, “Amy, life happens to every one of us every day.”

“A virtuoso musician could have a stroke and never be able to pick up their instrument again. All you do is you just take the hand you’re dealt that day and live the life that you get,’” she recalled.
