  • The Shards premiered on Aug. 5 on FX and Hulu and concluded on Sept. 9
  • The show follows a group of Los Angeles teenagers who are being tormented by a serial killer known as the Trawler
  • By the end of season 1, multiple people have been killed by Trawler, and almost everyone is under investigation

The Shards season 1 finale left viewers with more questions than answers.

Adapted from Bret Easton Ellis’ book of the same name, the series, which premiered on Aug. 5, revolves around a group of Los Angeles teenagers who become wrapped up in the hunt for a serial killer known as the Trawler.

The Shards is a fictionalized version of real-life events in Ellis’ life and was created by Glee’s Ryan Murphy. Igby Rigney plays Bret in the show, who at that point is an aspiring writer at Buckley prep school in Los Angeles. His costars include Kaia Gerber as student body president Susan Reynolds, Homer Gere as newcomer Robert Mallory, Hayes Warner as Bret’s girlfriend Debbie Schaffer and Graham Campbell as Susan’s boyfriend Thom Wright.

“I feel like I won the lottery or something,” Gerber told PEOPLE of her castmates in August 2026. “Also, they let me be friends with them, which is the coolest part.”

By the end of The Shards, multiple people have been killed by Trawler, and nearly everyone else is under investigation by the police.

So, where do Bret, Susan, Robert and the rest of The Shards main characters end up in the finale? Here’s everything to know about how The Shards season 1 ends.

Warning: The Shards season 1 spoilers ahead!

The Shards ends with its central characters gathered in a room with investigators, who reveal they’ve “come into some evidence” concerning the deaths of Katherine Latchford (Molly Peyton) and Matt Kellner (Owen Painter) and the kidnapping of Rhonda Fox (Ivy Wolk).

The investigators then drop a major bombshell: Not only do they believe that the crimes are all connected, but they also believe they were all committed by someone in the room.

The camera pans to all of the potential suspects before zooming in on Bret, who says, “That’s when things really got crazy.” At that point, the screen goes black, leaving viewers in the dark as to who the culprit might be.

The identity of the Trawler is not revealed at the end of The Shards season 1.

That said, the killer’s identity has been narrowed down to several suspects, including Bret, Robert, Susan, Thom and Debbie.

Additional suspects include Debbie’s mother Liz (Evan Rachel Wood), her father Terry’s assistant, Steven Reinhardt (Jordan Roth) and student Ryan Vaughn (Daniel Dale).

Debbie’s father Terry (Wes Bentley) doesn’t join his daughter to meet with the investigators because he is pushed over the top-floor balcony of his mansion before the suspects are gathered up by the police.

“Looks like he slipped — or crossed the wrong person,” Steven tells Liz.

Though he isn’t yet dead, Terry’s chances of survival look grim by the season’s end when Bret reveals that he’s on life support and could die.

It is also unclear if the Trawler is responsible for Terry’s accident or if it was someone else who decided to exact their revenge.

Bret’s reliability as a narrator is called into question by the end of The Shards season 1.

Robert casts doubt on Bret’s trustworthiness when he asks about the whereabouts of Bret’s parents, who have supposedly been on holiday in Europe. According to Robert, Bret’s father may actually be missing, and there’s no record of him requesting time off at work.

Terry’s accident also leaves the fate of Bret’s novel up in the air, which was supposed to be adapted into a movie by the wealthy film producer.

Is Robert the Trawler?

Bret still suspects that Robert is the Trawler by the end of the season, claiming to have “indisputable” evidence of his guilt that will result in him “going away in handcuffs.”

By the finale, however, the police have widened their pool of suspects to include several other students, Debbie’s mother Liz and Steven, a.k.a. Terry’s assistant.

Debbie discovers that Bret slept with her father in order to get his novel adapted into a film toward the end of season 1 of The Shards.

Rather than break up with him, however, she resorts to blackmail.

Hinting that she knows “a lot of things,” she recites a list of demands for Bret that includes helping her get elected prom queen and having sex with her every Friday and Saturday night.

Who does Susan end up with?

Though Susan and Thom have broken up by the end of season 1, Thom isn’t quite ready to give up on their relationship. He gets down on one knee and tells her that he wants to marry her and protect her before Susan is whisked away by Debbie.

Susan is subsequently attacked in her home, and when Thom shows up to scare off the intruder, Susan mistakenly believes that he is the one who broke into her house.

Robert also makes a declaration of love for Susan. The pair eventually kiss, though the moment is interrupted by the chaos surrounding Terry’s fall.

Will there be a second season of The Shards?

The Shards has not yet been renewed for a second season. In an August 2026 interview with Variety, however, Murphy said that he and Ellis hope to produce at least three seasons of the show.

“When I first met with [Ellis], he didn’t really want to do it as a limited series,” Murphy told the outlet. “He always thought this could be a three-year dramatic series, if not longer. I like that idea.”
