Stephen Colbert is detailing the chaotic process of bringing his Lord of the Rings movie to fruition.
Following his Emmy win for The Late Show on Monday, Sept. 14, Colbert, 62, opened up about the demanding task of writing a new Lord of the Rings film, a passion project he revealed in March. Colbert is co-writing the movie alongside his son, Peter Colbert, and the original trilogy screenwriter Philippa Boyens.
After the awards show, Colbert fielded questions from reporters, one of whom asked what’s next for him, “besides writing, of course.”

“That takes a lot of time, man,” Colbert responded of his writing. “You ever written a Lord of the Rings movie? It’s a full-time job.”
In March, as The Late Show neared its final episode, Colbert announced that he had a new project lined up — a Lord of the Rings movie that he and his son pitched to Peter Jackson, who’s spearheaded both the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies.
Colbert, a known super-fan of the films and the books they’re based on, added that the task of writing the film has been hectic as of late. “I just literally woke up in New Zealand yesterday. I flew here for the Emmys and yesterday [in] New Zealand, [it] was tomorrow here. So I went from yesterday to tomorrow, so I don’t know how many days today has been.”
“What did I say in my speech?” Colbert continued, drawing a laugh from the gaggle of reporters. “I was hallucinating up there. I’m in psychosis right now.”
Colbert’s The Late Show, which recently came to an official close on May 21, won the Emmy for Outstanding Variety Series — bringing the former host’s all-time Emmys tally to 12.

In his speech, Colbert thanked the wide-ranging crew of more than 200 that contributed to the show’s 11 successful years, and commended the young people who worked on the series, who Colbert described as “the future of our business.”
He then thanked the Emmy attendees, “at least 1,000 of” whom he interviewed at some point in time, Colbert added. He then thanked his wife, Evelyn McGee-Colbert, for her continued support, and finally thanked The Late Show‘s audience, who loyally watched the series until its end.
“We hope you enjoyed the show. We had a great time doing it for you,” he said. “That’s it, thank you. We’ll catch you all on the flip.”
