Survivor paid tribute to late crew member and editor Finian Shea Johnson during its 51st season premiere on Wednesday, Sept. 23.
The honor for the longtime crew member came at the end of the episode with a tribute that read, “In loving memory of Finian Shea Johnson,” according to Entertainment Weekly.
Johnson died on May 25 at age 48, according to his obituary. His cause of death has not been publicly disclosed. At the time of his death, his sister shared an Instagram tribute, writing, “My. brother. A world without him in it will forever be less vibrant. 💔🐋.”
The father of two joined the series in 2023 and worked on 78 episodes, according to his IMDb page. His work on Survivor 50 earned him and his collaborators a 2026 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Picture Editing for a Structured Reality or Competition Program.
Series host and showrunner Jeff Probst told Entertainment Weekly that Johnson joined for season 45 and began his tenure when the show’s run time expanded to 90 minutes. He confirmed that Johnson was with the show through Survivor 51. Probst said Johnson was hopeful to get the series to Survivor 51, saying, “And he absolutely believed it would happen.”
“His work ethic was incredible,” Probst recalled. “He was always, always, always willing to put in the work required to make an episode great.”
“Finian was an absolute joy in the edit bays,” Probst said. “He was a massive Survivor fan who loved working on a show that he and his kids could watch together.”
Johnson often brought his two sons, Van and Mac, to the show’s premieres and finale parties, Probst recalled.
“He was truly one of a kind. He dressed like a rockstar, and had a youthful demeanor,” Probst said. “He was a larger-than-life character with an even bigger heart.”
Prior to his work on Survivor, Johnson’s credits include The Amazing Race, The Voice, Project Runway and The Bachelor franchise’s The Bachelor, The Bachelorette, Bachelor Pad and Bachelor in Paradise.
