Kacey Musgraves is “pre-grieving” her dog Pearl.
The “Happy & Sad” singer, 36, went home for Christmas to visit her family in Texas. During their time together, she also shared on her Instagram Stories that her beloved family pet is nearing the end of her days.
“Been sad over here pre-grieving the loss of my Pearl Girl the last couple of days,” Musgraves wrote in a lengthy tribute, which included text shown over a photo of the canine laying on a dog bed in front of a fireplace.
According to the singer, Pearl “is still hanging on, but is very near the end.”
The seven-time Grammy winner revealed that she’s had her pet for 15 years, starting after a very special birthday.
“She came to me the day after my 21st bday and has seen me thru so many chapters,” she continued.
Musgraves recalled how Pearl previously lost a limb, referring to the dog as a “tripod,” but noting that her parents took Pearl in after that “because she was no longer suited for the road life.”
Still, Pearl never missed a beat when it came to giving and receiving love.
“They have loved her completely as their own,” Musgraves said of her mother and father’s relationship with Pearl. “My dad especially took a liking to her. She’s his best friend.”
The “Slow Burn” singer described loving a family pet as a double-edged sword.
“The bond we form with these creatures is a blessing..but a ticking time bomb,” she wrote. “An inevitable continuous deposit into a bank of future sadness. So painful but so worth it.”
Musgraves said she gave Pearl permission “to cross that rainbow bridge” if she needs to. “Not sure I will ever see her again,” she concluded.

A second Instagram Story followed, featuring a video of Pearl laying down as the “Too Good to Be True” singer gently petted her, calling her canine companion “tough as nails.”
“She’s survived two catastrophic accidents.. is missing an arm and has a rod in her hip. Maybe she’ll somehow actually outlive us all,” Musgraves wrote.
