A woman’s brother-in-law revealed that he’s had romantic feelings for her for years, shortly before his wedding to another woman.
The “overwhelmed” woman explained her messy situation in a post on Reddit, where she asked users on the platform what she should do. She’s been in a relationship with her husband for five years and has always had a “great” friendship with his older brother — but she said she had “no idea” that’s he’s been harboring a crush on her.
The woman’s brother-in-law started dating his fiancée about two years ago, which is around the same time the poster tied the knot. The two women quickly became “best friends.”
“I went out of my way to make sure she knew she had a friend in me if she wanted since we’re the only girls in the family,” she wrote of the bride-to-be, who got engaged three months ago.
The Redditor is a bridesmaid and has been helping with wedding planning. One wedding duty was going wedding dress shopping with the bride.
“[We] had a blast, we went to brunch, had some mimosas, found the dress, and went back to their house to celebrate,” the poster said. “I ended up alone in the kitchen with my brother-in-law a bit after being there and he said he just had to tell me something before it kept eating at him.”
The woman was “not at all expecting” what her brother-in-law would say.
” ‘I think I’ve had feelings for you for a few years and I’ve never been able to tell you and just needed to know if you ever felt the same,’ ” she said he told her.
At the time, the woman was “a little buzzed,” but those words quickly sobered her up and she immediately responded.
“I completely froze and just shook my head. I told him that no, I have never thought about him in any way other than a friend and a brother and I never would,” she said before exiting the awkward situation.
“Before he said anything else I bolted back to his fiancée and the other girls there and very discreetly told her I got my period and wasn’t feeling well and would have someone come get me and then come by soon for more wedding planning,” she continued. “She thought nothing of it and I called my best friend to come get me.”
The Redditor said she planned on telling her husband about what happened as soon as he got home from work, but was unsure if or how she should address the issue with the bride and groom.
She asked users: “Do I tell his fiancée, do I make him tell her, do I leave it, do I have my husband talk to him? Has anyone ever had something like this happen or have any advice, anything is appreciated.”

In the comments section, Redditors were concerned that the brother-in-law might tell the woman’s husband about the situation first, and potentially “twist the truth.”
“Talk to your husband first cuz what if you tell her and he tries to flip it saying you said those things 🥺,” one person commented.
A few days after her initial post, the woman updated the forum on what happened after she told her husband, who confronted his brother: “His fiancée has decided to take some time before deciding on how to move forward, contingent on him going to therapy alone and them going together.”
