Tippi Hedren is 95!
As the retired actress celebrates another year, her daughter Melanie Griffith, marked the special day by sharing a video of her birthday cake. Griffith’s Instagram post included a photo of Hedren blowing out candles and a clip of her waving to the camera.
“My beautiful Mama turned 95 yesterday! 🥰♥️🥰♥️🥰 She’s happy, healthy and feisty!!” Griffith, 67, wrote.
The actress began her storied career as a fashion model in New York City in the 1950s, but she gained international recognition in the 1960s after starring in the Alfred Hitchcock films The Birds and Marnie, the former of which scored her a win at the 1964 Golden Globes for most promising newcomer.
Alongside her filmography, which spans six decades, Hedren boasts a large extended family. In 1957, she welcomed Griffith with her then-husband, advertising executive Peter Griffith, whom she divorced four years later.
Melanie rose in notoriety as an actress in the 1988 film Working Girl and earned an Oscar nomination for her performance. The mother-daughter duo have even shared the screen together on several occasions.
Hedren is also grandmother to Griffith’s four children: Jesse Johnson, 42; Alexander Bauer, 39; Dakota Johnson, 35; and Stella Banderas, 28.
To mark her 94th birthday last year, Hedren exclusively told PEOPLE she spent the day alongside her family. “It may not be exciting to the rest of the world, but as a mother and grandmother it’s the perfect way to celebrate,” said the star. In photos Melanie shared from the festivities, Hedren could be seen rocking bold pink lipstick and sprinkle-covered glasses that read “CAKE TIME!”
When Hedren received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in January 2003, Melanie handed her the award — while a much younger Dakota and Stella watched from the audience.
In November 2016, to mark the release of Hedren’s memoir Tippi, she, Melanie and Dakota did a joint interview with Vanity Fair, where Melanie gushed about how meaningful it has been to be a part of the legendary family.
“The three generations just made me think about Mom, born in 1930, and me, in the ’50s, and Dakota, in the ’80s,” said the star. “The progression of life is really beautiful.”

Hedren even keeps in touch with her former son-in-law Don Johnson, with whom Melanie was married twice, in 1976 and 1989, before the pair divorced a second time in 1996.
“Beautiful… my co-star, Tippi Hedren,” Johnson, who starred in the 1973 movie The Harrad Experiment alongside the Hollywood icon, captioned an Instagram post of the two of them in August 2024.
