A 20-year-old who drank a portion of an energy drink before her workout had a seizure and a heart attack at the gym — which ultimately led to her going on life support.
Jazmin Garza, 20, drank a few sips of an energy drink before working out. “Moments after working out, she started to have a seizure,” her boyfriend Isaac Ayala — who was with her at the time — shared in a GoFundMe, “She collapsed on the floor (shaking) and her nose started to bleed!”
But Ayala also said in the GoFundMe that doctors are “not sure if this [the drink] is what caused it.”
He explained that they called 911, and while waiting for an ambulance to arrive, he couldn’t find Garza’s pulse.
“I began to give her CPR. As soon as the EMS got there, they took over and gave her CPR for several minutes and were finally able to get her heart pumping again after using a defibrillator to jump-start her heart,” Ayala wrote.
After going into cardiac arrest, Garza’s condition continued to deteriorate.
“Her stomach and kidneys stopped working, and her lungs and heart were in really bad shape,” Ayala wrote. “She had to overcome three different life supports (ECMO machine for her blood circulation, dialysis to clean out her kidneys, and a machine to control her oxygen levels) at the hospital and multiple procedures.”
Garza says that while she’s had palpitations in the past, she was never diagnosed with a heart condition. “I had no prior issues or family history of heart issues. Doctors still don’t know why this happened,” she told Kennedy News and Media via The Daily Mail.
She told the outlet that she generally avoids caffeinated beverages, but hadn’t been to the gym in a while and wanted to have a good workout — so she drank a third of the can.
After two weeks in the hospital, she was sent home — and she says doctors were unable to determine a cause for the heart attack: “They would run a lot of tests on my heart and all the tests came out fine. They couldn’t see any issues with my heart or why it happened or what might have caused it.”
