Kacey Musgraves Calls Comments About Her Reaction to Beyonce’s Grammy Win ‘Sensationalistic’ and ‘False’

Kacey Musgraves is shutting down rumors about her reaction after Beyoncé’s country album, Cowboy Carter, won multiple Grammy awards on Sunday, February 2.

According to E! News, Musgraves is calling the backlash nonsense.

“It’s a sensationalistic false narrative meant to pit two talented female artists against each other,” a rep for Musgraves, 36, told the outlet. “There was simply no scowl or expression made.”

Musgraves’ response to the headlines comes after cameras panned to her applauding Beyoncé after she won Best Country Album for Cowboy Carter, making her the first Black woman to win in the category.

Several observers online took her expression and standing ovation as “looking pissed,” as Musgraves’ Deeper Well was also nominated for Best Country Album. In the same breath, others claimed Lainey Wilson, who was also nominated, was “not happy” about Beyoncé’s win.

However, even prior to Musgraves’ recent statement, both country artists have shown their support for Beyoncé’s move into the country music genre.

In an interview with The Cut from March 2024, Musgraves said, “The more the f—ing merrier.”

“I don’t really care,” she added. “It doesn’t affect what I’m doing. It doesn’t affect me. I’ve always been just doing my own thing. It’s just fun to watch.”

And just weeks before the 67th Grammys, Wilson, 32, told NME that she’s “proud” to see artists like Beyoncé, 43, and Post Malone joining the mix.

“So many people are finding out that they love country music who didn’t know they liked it at all,” Wilson said. “Artists like Post and Beyoncé are introducing their audiences to this kind of music, and it’s only done good things for the genre. It’s cool to see.”
