Why Teen Mom’s Catelynn Lowell Won’t Be ‘Silent’ About Carly’s Adoption

Teen Mom’s Catelynn Lowell is defending her decision to speak out about her daughter Carly, who she placed for adoption in 2009.

“Before communication was cut, I was told Carly was asking her parents, ‘Why can’t we get together more? Why can’t we get together with them for holidays? They would fly here to come see me,’” Lowell, 32, alleged via her Instagram Story on Sunday, February 9. “So in my heart, I don’t feel it’s her wanting this.”

Earlier this month, Lowell and her husband, Tyler Baltierra, appeared on an episode of Teen Mom: The Next Chapter and claimed they were being blocked by Carly’s adoptive parents, Brandon and Teresa Davis.

In a separate interview with Us Weekly, Lowell — who is also mom to Nova, 10, Vaeda, 5, and Rya, 3 — said the last time she saw Carly was two years ago. “They basically have closed the adoption on us,” she claimed in January. “That’s hard.”

Teen Mom OG star Catelynn Lowell is silencing speculation about the reason she and husband Tyler Baltierra chose to place their firstborn daughter, Carly, up for adoption. “I wanted to set something straight. I’m seeing the comment a lot that people are saying Tyler gave me an ultimatum: either my baby or him,” Catelynn, 32, […]

In her latest social media post, Lowell expressed her hopes that Carly’s adoptive parents could share more information about what’s going on.

“If B&T would tell me it’s in fact Carly not wanting contact, then I would respect that with all of me!” she wrote. “And if her mom and dad called and said it’s what Carly wants, I would be silent. Yall wouldn’t hear a thing from me again about the situation! Because at the end of the day SHE is what’s MOST important.”

Baltierra, 33, and Lowell placed Carly, now 17, up for adoption as a newborn in 2009, as documented in MTV’s 16 and Pregnant.

Although the couple initially agreed to an “open” adoption with Carly’s adoptive parents — meaning they could receive photos and see their daughter in person once a year — things began to change when Carly got older.

“I want Carly to know that if she’s the one that still wants contact and it’s not happening, I will fight for that til the day I die or until she tells me it’s too hard for me to have contact,” Lowell shared with Us. “But until that day, I want her to know that I am always here and always willing to do whatever I can.”

While sitting down with their adoption counselor, Dawn, on the Thursday, February 6, episode of Teen Mom: The Next Chapter, both Lowell and Baltierra were presented with a different point of view.

“Could it be that if [Brandon and Teresa’s] opinion is different than yours and they’ve asked for space and they’ve asked for things to chill and it hasn’t happened, then is it the only alternative that they can see?” Dawn shared. “And you guys, again, you have to own the fact that you have a lot of power.”

After pointing to the couple’s combined 7.4 million Instagram followers, Dawn suggested they take a “step back” from the process.

“Just allow yourself to take a pause,” Dawn suggested. “We don’t know what tomorrow brings. We don’t know what three months from now is going to be.” Us Weekly has reached out to the Davis family for comment.

Teen Mom: The Next Chapter airs on MTV Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET.
