Martin Short is celebrating his 2025 SAG Awards win despite missing out on the ceremony.
During the event on Sunday, February 23, Short won his first SAG Award at the age of 74, taking home the trophy for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series for his role in Only Murders in the Building. The Hulu series also scored Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.
Short, however, was noticeably absent from the awards show. In a statement to Deadline on Sunday, Short’s rep explained that the actor “was not able to attend due to Covid.”
While he wasn’t there to thank his peers in person, Short expressed his gratitude in a statement, noting, “The honor of being in Only Murders In The Building is the most spectacular compliment anyone could be given. The honor of being awarded by your peers is even greater. Thank you so so much.”

Fellow OMITB star Steve Martin was also not in attendance “due to a previous conflict in his schedule,” per his reps. Martin later congratulated Short, writing via Instagram, “I’m the buddy of a winner! Congratulations to Martin Short for his best comedy actor award, and thank you SAG for our comedy ensemble award!”
Martin, 79, revealed earlier this month that Short contracted COVID at Saturday Night Live’s 50th anniversary special, announcing that the pair’s live shows in Durham, North Carolina, and Knoxville, Tennessee, for their Dukes of Funnytown Tour were postponed until October. The duo were originally expected to perform in Tennessee on Sunday.
“So sorry for the inconvenience,” Martin wrote via Instagram while announcing the new dates. “I think we’ll be funnier then, anyway.”
Without Short and Martin by her side, Selena Gomez accepted the award for Ensemble in a Comedy Series on behalf of the OMITB cast.

“We never win, this is so weird,” Gomez, 32, said on Sunday, joking, “Marty and Steve aren’t here because … you know, they don’t really care.”
Gomez was joined on stage by Michael Cyril Creighton, Richard Kind, Kumail Nanjiani and Molly Shannon. Eugene Levy, Eva Longoria and Zach Galifianakis, who were recognized for their work on season 4, didn’t appear at the SAG Awards.
OMITB has been nominated in the ensemble category every year since 2022, but Sunday marked the show’s first win.
