Melania Trump ‘Leads Her Own Life’ 1 Month into Husband’s Second Presidency (Exclusive Sources)

First lady Melania Trump has her own way of doing things as President Donald Trump settles into his second term in office.

Melania attended the Governors Ball over the weekend after nearly a month-long break from making any public appearances. She had last been seen with Donald visiting disaster-stricken areas in North Carolina and California on Jan. 24.

A political source tells PEOPLE that her stepping away from the spotlight during her husband’s first few weeks in office “should not come as a surprise because this is how she lives.”

“She will never be a traditional first lady. That isn’t who she is,” the source says, adding that she has “her own ideas on what she wants to do.”

The source says that Melania “has been involved with moving ahead on her own projects, and recently she has been in the White House for that.”

One such project that Melania has lined up is her upcoming Amazon Prime Video documentary, which Brett Ratner is directing and she is executive producing alongside Fernando Sulichin.

“Melania has been busy shooting her documentary and that has taken place in several locations, including the White House,” a Miami political source tells PEOPLE.

Although no official release date has been announced, Variety reported that it is set to be released in the second half of 2025.

A social source tells PEOPLE that Melania has stayed at both Mar-a-Lago and the White House over the past month, but that she hasn’t spent meaningful time at the White House in an official capacity.

“[Donald and Melania] both live at Mar-a-Lago and have quarters in the White House,” the social source says. “But she leads her own life and joins him when appropriate in either place.”

That source notes that when Melania is in Palm Beach, she typically “keeps to herself” but does accompany her husband to dinner “on occasion.”

One of the official first lady projects that Melania previously vowed to work on during her husband’s second presidency was a revival of her “Be Best” initiative, which was originally launched in May 2018 as an “awareness campaign” to help kids combat online bullying and the opioid epidemic.

In January, Melania told Fox & Friends that she hoped to “expand” the initiative after streaming platforms did not support it much during Donald’s first administration.

“Imagine what we could do in those years if they will rally behind me and teach the children and protect them about social media and their mental health,” she said. “It will be an exciting four years. We have a lot to do.”
