Drunk Passenger Killed in Car Crash After She Grabbed Steering Wheel from Driver

A woman was killed in Detroit when she grabbed the steering wheel of the car she was in on I-94, causing the driver to lose control, police say.

On Sunday, Feb. 23, at about 10:25 p.m., a 27-year-old man was behind the wheel of a Nissan Sentra when the vehicle struck a concrete wall before crossing all lanes on I-94 and slamming into another concrete wall, Michigan State Police said, CBS News reports.

The driver said he was arguing with his passenger, a 28-year-old Detroit woman who had been drinking, when she yanked the wheel, police said.

The woman wasn’t wearing a seatbelt, police said. She was taken to a local hospital where she later died, ClickOnDetroit reports.

Two young children who were in the car — a 1-year-old and a 2-year-old — were taken to the hospital with injuries.

Police do not believe the driver had been drinking or was under the influence of drugs, police said, according to Fox2Detroit.

“Troopers still have some investigation to complete on this crash,” MSP F/Lt. Mike Shaw told Fox2Detroit. “We want to remind drivers and passengers to wear their seat belts anytime they get in the vehicle.”

Police continue to investigate. They did not name anyone involved.

MSP did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
