Michelle Trachtenberg suffered from health issues before her death at age 39 — some of which worried her loved ones.
“We all knew she was sick, but we didn’t realize how sick. For a long while, she had back issues and then bone problems; she fell a few times,” a source exclusively tells Us Weekly of Trachtenberg, who the insider notes had “such a significant cultural impact.”
The source shares that “every time” they spoke with Trachtenberg over the past decade, there was something “wrong.”
“She lived back and forth between New York and L.A.,” the insider says. “When you asked her what she was doing for work, she would say she was taking care of herself.”

A separate source claims that “something felt off” the last time they saw Trachtenberg, adding, “You could sense something was going on when you saw her. She was really frail and had been sick for a while.”
News broke on Wednesday, February 26, that Trachtenberg was found unconscious inside her apartment in New York City’s Midtown West. Police sources confirmed to Us that her cause of death is “not yet apparent” and the incident is not believed to be suspicious. Multiple sources told Us that Trachtenberg had a liver transplant ahead of her death.
While paying tribute to Trachtenberg, pal Amanda de Cadenet shared that the Gossip Girl alum — who had a lengthy hospital stay last year — called her from a “hospital bed.”
“I will always remember you as the young vivacious woman I met when I took this photo of you … and seeing your face from the hospital bed when we FaceTimed recently, even though you did not look like you, your sweetness and humor were still alive,” de Cadenet, 52, wrote via Instagram on Wednesday. “I’m so sad for you that the outcome was not a better one. Wishing you a peaceful transition sweet friend and may your spirit finally rest.”

Trachtenberg’s Harriet the Spy costar Rosie O’Donnell called the late actress’ death “heartbreaking” in a statement to Us. “I loved her very much,” O’Donnell, 62, said. “She struggled the last few years. I wish I could have helped.”
Now, as costars, pals and fans alike mourn the loss of Trachtenberg, the first insider is remembering how much “people loved her.”
“You’d hang out with her, and it wasn’t like she was crazily famous, but those who loved her were obsessed and would come up and talk,” the first source shares.
The second insider adds that the Buffy the Vampire Slayer alum was “eccentric and quirky” with a “very small group of close friends.”
“She was a lovely human being and a good friend,” the second source continues. “She remembered birthdays, was kind, and if she saw something on Instagram, she would reach out and say something nice.”
