A woman says her friend is upset with her because she asked to take back a present she knew the friend planned to get rid of.
In a post on Reddit’s “Am I the A——” forum, the woman, 27, said she gifted her friend, dubbed Mary, 28, a “set of really nice, crystal champagne glasses that were in really good condition and cheaper than their worth” that she found at an estate sale.
Detailing that Mary lives a “high quality, fancy lifestyle,” and that she thought the glassware would be “perfect” for her, the Redditor added that the items “were within my budget,” as she was “recovering from student loans and just put down a deposit on my first apartment in the city.”
Later on, the woman wrote that everyone had a good time at the event, but things took a turn for the worse, however, when Mary began to open presents.
After opening the woman’s champagne glasses, Mary inquired where they were from, as they had no tag.
“I explained that I didn’t know the brand, but the person running the estate sale had assured me that they were authentic and had been a wedding gift to the previous owners,” the Redditor wrote.
But, “at the mention of the estate sale, Mary became visibly disgusted,” she continued.
The woman said that Mary was then cold to her for the rest of the party. “I overheard her whispering to some of the other guests about how I had the audacity to give her a used item and that she would be discarding them later,” she wrote.
Offended by Mary’s planned action, the woman said she approached her friend privately after the event and asked her to return the gift, given that she said she had no use for it.
“She flipped out and told me it was extremely rude to ask for them back and it was not my business what she did with them,” the woman explained of her friend, however.
She concluded her post by noting that her family “is understanding and thinks that I did nothing wrong, but some mutual friends also at the event think otherwise.”

In the comments section of the post, other Redditors agreed with the woman that Mary was in the wrong.
“It’s incredibly bad manners to say you’re going to get rid of a gift,” one person said.
“Actually …. if someone says they don’t like a gift — in front of everyone — it is perfectly fine to offer to take it back. That is, in fact, good manners,” another user added.
